the self powered neon's are awesome, and you can use them in you room or play out for up to 50 people

IMO PA speakers are overkill in a house. Get a decent receiver and some floor speakers and be done with it. Or go the monitor route... they get fucking bonkers loud too. The KRK Rokit series is very popular on this forum, some Alesis models too. I found some really nice M-Audio monitors for cheap too. So lots of good options out there.

Nothing wrong with Behringers - despite what a few unfoundedly biased people might tell you, the majority of reviews show their studio monitors to be excellent bang for the buck, and owning them myself, I have to concur. Pair up the b2031a monitors with a b2092a sub and you'll have all the sound you need for a price that won't have you making payments until 2010. I wouldn't buy any studio monitors without matching them up with a sub - my experience has been that while monitors alone are wonderfully accurate in the sound they convey, you'll be missing out on a lot of low end unless a subwoofer enters into the picture.

Unless you plan on doing small parties like 20-100 people, then those PA speakers are total overkill. If you have close neighbors then you won't be able to turn them up at all and I personally think they don't sound good unless they're turned up.

I have a pair of 5" KRK monitors with a 10" sub and I can't even turn them up at night or else I get calls asking if I can turn the music down. My full range cabs and amp stay in the closet collecting dust unless I really need to throw a party.

Some good advice here - as Pivottechno said, the 2031A's are some of the best value monitors around - they really do sound good for the cash, in fact a lot better than many more expensive speakers. I think most Behringer stuff is shite, but they got these ones right.

They also go about as loud as you're going need for a simple house party. I don't like subs for reference monitoring (unless planned really well, matched to the acoustically treated room with bass traps, placed perfectly etc. - IMO too many variables for accurate bass representation).....but for DJ'ing it could be fine to add a little bass and in a way, some overall volume.

If you don't give too much of a crap about quality monitors and just want an OK, cheap, loud solution, go to Salvation army or you local large charity shop and pick up some big brand name hifi speakers - seriously, you can get amazing deals on things like 5 year old sony/panasonic/pioneer/etc. large hifi speakers for a fraction of the price of PA or monitors spreakers, and a fraction of the price of good new Hifi speakers.

They won't be good for accurate monitoring but they'll sbe fine for home Dj'ing and house parties - it's the cheapest way to get a real budget loud system.
