Hey folks,

I'm writing another book about DJing, and a tiny part at the front covers Francis Grasso's influence on the modern DJ. The editor would like an image of him, and apart from the colour one of him in the DJ booth that you'll find if you search Google Images, which is too small, I can't find anything.

Anyone else have anything, or have any leads? I'm kinda lost on this one I'm afraid.

As much as I don't appreciate the tone of your reply, I agree with you 100% - and am positively not looking on Google for any information in this, or any other book I have written. Google is a starting point for people who can't be bothered looking elswhere.

The reference to Google was only to mention (ironically) the image that Zejayman has posted (sorry man, that's the one I can find).

However, as your reply has pissed me off, accusing me of not thoroughly researching my material, I'm gonna flame back with this, which is sure to start a shit war, but as I'm pissed off.....

This is the fucking problem with the internet. Everyone's got an ill-advised opinion, and feels they have some right to put it in writing without actually knowing what they're on about. I'm not claiming DJing for Dummies is literary genius (that'll be a nice point for you to pick up on in your reply) and neither is the current book about DJing I'm writing - but I DO research my books, and really don't fucking appreciate you suggesting other-wise.

I appreciate your time taken in replying to my post - but if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.

They had a documentary movie last night about hecklers who try to disrupt comedians, singers etc. Interesting, the hecklers have personality problems and believe their comments are brilliant. In a live situation you can get rid of them but they are just a constant nuisance on the internet.

I think forum wiseguys fall into the same category as hecklers. Some of them if you look at their history, 99% of their posts are negative, they hate DJs, hate music, hate clubs, etc. If anyone talks about a project, they will be there with a put-down. Got to wonder if there is ANYTHING they like and why they don't go hang out someplace they actually would comment positively or constructively about something.

You're probably right - though it must be said that elfreak's reply was probably 100% what he felt, but alas also a bit of baiting - something which I feel a bit sheepish at responding so vociferously.

Like i said, he's got a point - the internet's a place for a lot of interesting information - but not the end of that search for sure. I'd just rather not get tarred with that shitty stick...

Thanks for the support though - the new book's aimed at kids with learning difficulties - and though it's by no means a thorough examination of DJing and DJ history, if it helps to encourage a kid to love music, I'll have done my job.

Go Canada! (Although I've only ever done the East Coast - I love it to bits, never found a Canadian I didn't like...)

Yes, DJ mag did a 4 page article about him 4,5 maybe 6 years ago, called something like "this man inventing DJ'ing." It had a current-ish large 2 page picture of him (looking a lot worse for wear, since the mob incident) and some pictures throughout the article of him from back in the day. It was by Bill Brewster (last night a DJ saved my life etc.).

I commend you for writing a book such as this especially for learning difficulties and I've also done a large amount of work for the disabled.

However, I feel you are on slightly dangerous ground here with Francis Grasso - I sure I don't need to tell you about him or his life but just bear in mind that this guy was as just as famous for his drug fueled (and often life threatening) antics / debauchery as he was for (arguably) inventing mixing - I'm really not sure this is a great role model (even though true and part of dance music history) for people with learning difficulties who want to know about DJing culture.

I'm not saying don;t do it but just it's a bit difficult to talk about what he did for music without given a context of the lifestyle or the whole story, drug use, the sex stories and attempted murder by mafia, 'n all.

Yeah, it's something I went over with the editor about - but as we're literally just saying that he 'invented' slip-cueing and the basic concept of beatmatching, and then we move on with nothing else about him, it should be ok.

I'll re-impress this point upon them though. Thanks for the info about DJ Mag and Bill Brewster though, maybe they'll dig something out.
