A Somali girl who said she had been raped has been stoned to death in Somalia after being accused of adultery, a human rights group has said.

Amnesty International said in a press release on Friday that the victim, Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow, had been 13 years old - not 23 as earlier reports had suggested.

Duhulow was stoned to death on October 27 by dozens of men in a stadium packed with 1,000 spectators in the southern port city of Kismayo, Amnesty International and Somali media reported, citing witnesses.

The armed group in charge of Kismayo had accused her of adultery after she reported that three men had raped her, Amnesty said.

"This child suffered a horrendous death at the behest of the armed opposition groups who currently control Kismayo," David Copeman, Amnesty International's Somalia campaigner, said in a statement.

Initial local media reports said Duhulow was 23, but her father told Amnesty International she was 13.

The Islamic Courts took control of much of Somalia in 2006, triggering an intervention by neighbouring Ethiopia, which propped up the UN-backed transitional government and ousted the movement.

While the group's political leadership largely fled the country, the movement's military and youth wing, the al-Shaabab, switched to guerrilla warfare.

In recent months the group appears to have gained strength, taking over the port city of Kismayo, and dismantling pro-government roadblocks.

You are so bloody late. Ethiopia, with US help, invaded Somalia in 2006, defeated the Islamic Courts Union (ISU), and now occupies the country. No doubt the ISU has launched a full scale guerilla insurgency which I sympathize with. The puppet government of President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed and Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein are accused of torture, summary executions, detention without charge, and a police force more akin to roaming pillagers than police. You want to harp on the Islamic movement? The Transitional Government is little better. At least when the Islamic Courts held sway, there was some semblence of law and order and a drastic reduction in corruption of the law. The port of Mogadishu was even opened for the first time in years allowing desperately needed supplies to enter the city.

If you think democracy is possible in Somalia, you're fooling yourself. And with American-backed foreign occupation of the country, the terrorism will only get worse, I promise you that.

You're defending a group with a human rights record on par with the Taliban.

Things in Somalia were far more complicated than you depict there - your obsession with "national sovereignty" is making you blind to instances where the state has failed and there is no sovereignty to uphold. By all standards Somalia was a failing state even under the Islamic Courts - your self-determination argument holds a lot more water if you use it to support the governments of Somaliland or Puntland.

I do think you are greatly over-stating the competency and popular legitimacy of the Islamic Courts. Their main purpose is to impose Sharia law and destroy segments of the population inimical to radical fundamentalism. The opening of the port in Mogadishu, as I explained in a previous thread, didn't have much to do with the courts persay as much as it did with the resurgence of the black market and piracy.
