Music tastes and personality

Does a person's taste in music say something about their personality?

Are reggae fans bound to be calm, lethargic people?

Are hardcore lovers likely to be intense people?

Are all pop aficionados vacuous and immature?

Are tech-heads sophisticated and mature?

Discuss.

In that case

i start the day spaced and spread out , gradually i build up into a full driving mood , and then i dive into a full on ecstacy lasting a while.
soon it builds up again until a brilliant cresendo of energy.
it carries on for a while but starts to lose power after that.

if everyday could be like a trance tune.

I think the better question is does the music being played affect one, or a groups personality, and behavior? For the most part yes.
Isn't that what music sets out to do? Isn't that why a dj plays a set in a certain way?

When I listen to reggae its because I want to be calm and mellow, when I listen to trance/house its because I want to be happy and in a good mood.

I never listen to negative, yelling or angry music, because i don't want to be in a bad mood, and I don't want to be angry or agressive.

But the people who listen to agressive angry music, must be happy that they are listening to music they like, but usually I think they will also be more agressive and angry by nature. But I had a friend who liked hardcore bands, but he was also extremely calm and friendly...so maybe i don't quite know what I'm talking about.

Yes. My friend actually told me recently that when he meets new people he always asks about their taste in music in order to help determine what kind of person they are.

I don't think the music people listen to resemble their personality. I came to this conclusion through obvious general observation. Take people who listen to Top 40 which is in the millions: Do each one of them exhibit the same personality? Nope.

I was thinking more along the lines that perhaps one or two traits could be shared between fans of a certain genre, rather than their personalities being copies of one another.

The taste itself says very little, I believe. There are loads of factors that shape one's taste, such as exposition (the more you listen to something, the better you tend to like it), that have little or no connection to one's actual personality. But, once you learn more about a person, their musical taste surely becomes a more meaningful element, even when it doesn't seem to make much sense (I don't know why the hell heavy metal fans here are obsessed with the Middle Ages).

In my case, for example, I love trancecore, drum'n'bass and acid techno. If you meet me, though, you'll see I'm just a bookish guy, who seldom goes to parties and festivals... a bit hyperactive, I admit, specially when I'm around megaphones, but that's all

Indie fans have low self-esteem and are lazy, I knew it!

edit: I wouldn't believe anything that article says for three reasons:

a) The publication itself is unreliable for scientific stories.

b) No details have been given as to how the study was conducted and how accuracy was measured.

c) It seems as if they only measured for five traits (self-esteem, creativity, gentleness, work ethic and calmness)
