Why don't record labels like mediafire / rapid shire etc?

Everyone says that record labels don't like being sent demos in the form of links to mediafire / rapidshire sites etc. Why is this? It only takes like 10 seconds to click a few links. Has anyone ever been signed to a label after sending a link to their file on mediafire, rapid share or another site? Or does everyone buy their own webspace?

p.s. If you have got signed after sending a link to a free site, which free site did you use?

cheers.

... what label is giving you a hard time? most request you upload it to one of those sites (if not their own FTP)

We personally use a pro-account on yousendit. This is for me by far the fastest site. I don't like rapidshare, but I always tend to download the stuff that I get sent from my mates/producers. Further, my label mates have absolutely no problem with that. So, as 90% of the record industry is one big bunch of... ahem, well that wouldn't surprise me that some arrogant bloke won't get the stuff on those sites and doesn't take you seriously... which is a shame.

Well none have given me a hard time as such - I'm just worried that they wont even listen if its on mediafire etc, and then not reply either, so I will have no idea of knowing whether they actually listened to the demo or not. I didn't know that MOST labels ask you to upload it to their site, I just thought a few like Anjunabeats do.

Cheers

@ Lolo, lol maybe yours is the only label which doesnt have arrogant blokes running it.

not at all. There are many good people too. I'd rather say 50/50 inside the Dance music industry.

Its a bit unprofessional to use those sites, also, theres the issue of having to wait 20 seconds or whatever for rapidshare. This is porbably what they have a problem with. if you have a pro account or whatever which negates this, then it should be fine

Most labels I've worked with usually have a dedicated FTP. Those who don't, prefer sendspace. Not sure why, but prolly because there is no waiting and is only a click away. After seeing first hand all the things ppl send to a label and the ways they send it, I understand why labels insist on a single hosting site. Just imagine having 50 ppl send you tracks and each uses a different host. And each host has a different way of spamming you and making you wait. It gets quite irritating..
But of all the hosts out there, rapidshare would prolly be the last one I'd use. It's simply made for ppl with pro accounts. Free users are always harassed one way or the other. Be it waiting, decrypting a word to type in, or, worst of all, limiting download speed.
In short, what ever host you choose to use make sure it's as simple as possible for the end user/downloader and also make sure you know their rules. You wouldn't want them deleting your track before the label has a chance to download it

As A&R for Perfecto I get a TON of demos. its so hard to keep up with everything. I would have to say the absolute WORST is people who send links to their myspace page. We wont even open those, often not even respond. Its not an arrogance thing, its a time management thing.

But also, quite annoying is the sites that make you wait 45seconds to get a link. When you have 40 new demos in one day to download along with 100 emails to respond to, the 45 seconds adds up. Also, with many of these style sites you have to dig around for the link, often clicking the wrong link and getting re-rerouted to another site.

Bottomline, if you want to approach professional labels, you generally want to look as professional as possible as well. Using a site that has Porn adds next to you link doesnt look too professional.

As Lolo mentioned, yousendit.com is a nice exception to these sites, specially if you have an upgraded account. I have an upgraded account that costs me 4.99 a month. This is really convenient as well as it allows the link to be live for two weeks opposed to the usual one week. I know from my experience it can sometimes take me a week or two to get caught up on promo and demo emails. I sometimes miss a link and if i am really swamped i cant always go back looking for a new link. I have also seen from the tracking stats other A&Rs can take more than a week to grab the download as well.

So yea, i suggest, making a demo email as brief and to the point as possible but be sure to include the key points. Make the link as low maintenance as possible.

Hope the thoughts help.

::EDIT::
Just remembered a HUGE pet peve!! DONT send both the generic Yousendit email along with a 2nd email explaining the yousendit email you just sent. Send the track to your own email. Then cut and paste that link from the email in a fresh email to the A&R or DJ whom youre sending the track too.

Fileden.com lets you hotlink with a free account. I don't think any other free file sharing site does that. Can't get any more maintenance free than a direct link. Also, your files are never deleted so long as you log into your account once a month.
