reason help

So i've been using reason for a few years now...i've gotten pretty comfortable and thats kinda why i havn't switched.

but every time i make a song and i try to push it to it's limits, the songs just start getting messy, and i have no control over it.

are there any actual ways to keep everything from sounding distorted and bleeding into other synths? or should i just give up and switch to real software?

here's an example of it turning messy

Not sure what you mean, but the 14:2 mixer muddies things up a lot once you add in a few things.

You'll need to calculate the levels things are at, and increase/decrease the volume the things are at by whatever another way, and use the spider audio merger to merge the signals for the final source instead (don't forget you can daisy chain).

lower your volume and use compression/limiters on all instruments before the mixer. the mixer seems to work better with low inputs, then push up the volume again after the mixer with m-class intruments.

It's easy to blame the software. There is nothing keeping you from making a professional sounding mix in Reason but skill. Ever heard any Daniel Kandi track? Yeah, he uses Reason.

That is complete and utter bullshit. The mixer in Reason is perfectly transparent as you would expect a digital mixer to be (Assuming all EQs are turned off of course). If you'd have any experience with DSP programming you would know how ridiculous your claim is.

Processing a highly structured and complex pattern of sensory input as a unified percept of "music" is probably one of the most elaborate features of the human brain.....understanding how music is perceived and how it may elicit intense sensations is far from being understood.

Agreed reason is real, its not what you got but how you use it. Professionals use reason day in day and make great tracks that goes for any other piece of software, logic, cubase, renoise, ableton.

All I can advise mate is to study your track break it down to find out what is going wrong in the mix. If you have problems learn more about mixing, Eq - eventually you'll crack it.

Go to reasonstation.com and download songs from other artists there are some pro sounding tracks which you could learn from and see how they produce good results.

And that's called the art of mixing, that it gets messy is totally up to you and not the software. There are a lot of tutorials in the Tutorial Masterlist that will help you get along with the mixing.

Distortion should be handled with care, it can create a mess (if not mixed properly). Also, refering to the first quote, if you are pushing a track to it's limit, it will probably go and clip on a certain point and when that happens, it's pretty likely that you'll get distortion.

Owyeah, and another cool tip. If you are fond of distortion, take a 909 kickdrum, throw a loadfull of distortion over it, and fill in the application form @ www.hardcoreaddict.com ..
