Still need to sleep, but I'll write a review now.
Coming from Kitchener, I spent a total of about 7 hours on buses, waiting at the terminals, and wandering through downtown Toronto tonight. Greyhound is a pain in the ass. But it was soooooooo worth it.
Walked in to Mark Oliver playing Deadmau5 - Clockwork. Perfect. ^_^ He did a great job of setting up the night.
Piet played a really solid early set and threw down a few good tunes. I was very happy. mmm Chakalaka. ^_^
But the real story of the night was Gareth Emery... or, excuse me, Gareth FUCKING Emery. This guy has been on fire for some time now and I was thrilled to finally get a chance to see him live (was this his first time in Toronto?) His style is one that I really enjoy; he plays trance, but with a lot of groovy house and electro influences. Kinda like Ferry Corsten, but more progressive, not as cheesy, and not as abrasive. And holy fuck... he delivered. I did not stop dancing the entire time.
My tune of the night was one of the last tracks he played: Dennis Sheperd - Run Away. This is more or less an Ian Carey-style hands-in-the-air big room house tune with an electro bassline. But Gareth sped it up by about 8bpm and used it to tear the Guv a new asshole. I couldn't believe that he played it, but it worked SO WELL.
Menno played WAY harder than he did the last time he was here. His set pretty much sounded like BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM << trancey melodic breakdown >> BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM etc.
He played really well with a lot of energy; some good tunes here and there, a lot of Sander Van Doorn, Wippenberg, etc. My personal preferences lean much more Gareth's style than the stuff Menno was throwing down, but Menno did get me moving and completely destroyed Guv's dancefloor by the end of the night, so I don't really have any honest complaints. He played a lot of remixes and mashups of classics too... Rapid Eye - Circa Forever, Motorcycle - As The Rush Comes, Binary Finary - 1998, etc.
Jennifer Rene..... LOL. She's like the Sarah Palin of DJing.
Jennifer trainwrecked her first transition. HORRIBLY. I was truly in disbelief... I mean, I've heard the stories and all, but to actually be in Guv and witness a trainwreck that terrible coming from an international DJ was really quite shocking. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised.
Anyways, Jennifer crowd-whored for her whole set, waved her arms around, played a bunch of tracks with her vocals in them and sang along, and trainwrecked some more. The tunes were actually not that bad. But the act in the DJ booth was... sufficiently bad that it was funny. She trainwrecked about 40% of the time, I think (although I left around 6, so mayhaps she got better for the second half of her set...? :P)
I walked into Guv knowing about 2 people there, but met a lot of TAs throughout the night, and even ran into some old friends. You guys are awesome, and I really should come out to Toronto to party more often.
My legs hurt. Time to go lie down.
Cheers,
~ Elyot

Prelim review:
Hey Shaya/Hey Man—COWS!!!!... Jagerbomb, beer, beer, beer, fucked up UW honourary shot....holy shit Emery's delivering!!!! scene missing...jack daniels shot, bizarre "snakebite" shot, beer, beer,.. scene missing...goddamn Andrew's destoying this room!!!
End.
Time to reverse engineer the night through sleep. More here once it can be compiled properly to make sense.
Edit:
So, simply put, great times with great people. Thanks to everyone for the birthday drinks...I think lol. & certainly for the greetings & well wishes. Cheers Chris!
Excellent tunes from Rank1, Emery, & Menno & tip top energy up front all night. Great meetin you too Mme. Vaughn, also nice to see the elusive Fahad stompin the floor again. And I'm sure I met a few other old faces again & new ones... but I'm trusting all you to remember that lol.
Delightful weirdness at times (i.e. random cranked up skasian wanting to copy that awful shot at the bar & then seeing my reaction to the taste & booking it ), tremendous inebriation at others.
But the highlight of the night, without question, had to be Andrew's domination of the Acid Lounge. Easily the set of the night! I went in to check on him as Menno came on, & barely got out of there for the rest of the night. Also, I know it wasn't just me, as I watched 1-by-1 more & more people poke their head in & just get drawn in & start losing it to the sounds he laid down. Hats off to you hombre!!
