It's tough for small business to survive in this kind of economic climate. Sometimes you have a business which relies solely on others, as in your case and when they go bust there's not really much you can do.
Look at the bright side though. You made some cash, got valuable experience and have a kick ass thing to put on your resume for future jobs.

I have a buddy in a similar situation. Was partners in a transmission shop. Did extremly well. Bought a million dollar, 6000 sq ft home with money to spare. Recently he got bought out by his partner. Started his own shop while the economy is shit. He lost his house & is now living with his in-laws lol
