I would prefer to buy something that has a little more functionality than I currently need so my studio can grow with it. I collab with cryophonik on a lot of vocal tracks. He does all the vocal recording but it may be something I get into in the future. |
Obviously, you know that I use and like my MOTU 828mkII, but here are a few considerations regarding recording live instruments. If you think that you will only be recording vocals and only one at a time, you don't necessarily need the XLR inputs/preamps like those found on the 828mkII/III, RME FF400/800, etc. Instead, you could just buy something that has enough 1/4-inch inputs to handle the number of hardware synths that you think you might purchase, but without XLR inputs and preamps, plus at least one more input (analog or digital) for adding a preamp at a later date. Then, if/when you decide to record vox, you could just buy a mic and an external preamp/channel strip and route it into the extra input. I route the digital output (SPDIF) of my JoeMeek OneQ into my MOTU's SPDIF input and use that for >90% of my recordings. About the only time I use the MOTU's XLR inputs is when I need to record more than one instrument simultaneously (e.g., when Aliciya is recording vox and guitar scratch tracks).
The other option is to just go with something like a MOTU 828mkIII and have those XLR inputs and preamps available to you for when you need them.
And, as far as the Virus TI is concerned, you'll likely be running that directly into your computer via USB as alanzo mentioned, so you won't be using any of your soundcard's inputs.
