The song key, did I get it right?

I'm not sure if I understand how the song key is determined?
Is it the key your bass line is played?
Lets say my bass goes C D# G#
So is the song key then C since the bass starts from C?

Or am I in totally worn way here...

It would be a key that has d and g as sharps. As well as you'd generally either start or finish on the root note, or both.

A quick wiki reveals c minor has both those notes as sharps, as well as having the root note c obviously.

Ok, so I did get it totally wrong...
Well what about a song when the bass line goes A F G?
So they all notes are on the white keys...?
How do you get that song's song key?

A minor has no sharp notes, and that starts on a, so I'd guess its a minor.

There are 2 main types of scales (not including harmonic or any of that stuff) for each combination of notes (i.e. which sharps there are, or if there aren't any). One minor key and one major key. You can differentiate between the two based on what notes/chords are mostly being used.

e.g. if things go: c e g, then it's likely c major.

wheras if its: a c e then its likely a minor.

Ok... So I guess that a song with a bass A# F# G#
the song key is B major?
Did I get it right now?

Well, I'm no expert... however I'd probably place a bet on g sharp minor rather then b major. Concidering this ends on a G sharp and doesn't contain a B.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G-sharp_minor
There's a useful little chart at the bottom of that page.

I'm not sure I'm right on this, I'm no musical theorist [sic]. But my own theory is that you follow the scale a melody is played in, and then that's derived from the chords it plays.

Check out some of the threads in the tutorial list. I'm sure that it'll clear some stuff up for you.
