Things, They Be UnRight [paranoid downbeat/twisted psy/other stuff]

Mix #2 from I. This one's a little more ambitious than the first but since I'm still using 'el ghetto programme' to arrange it, don't be expecting any kind of super-amazing DJ tricks. Besides, that's really not what this is about.

Once again, it's more of a 'mixtape' than a DJ set, so genres, tempos, and transitions are willfully erratic. However, although I'm more interested in showcasing tracks rather than tightly controlling groove, I've also again tried to maintain some semblance of theme. In this case, call me somewhat inspired by The Joker's madness.

Also as before, I didn't go into this with much forethought. From gathering up tracks to finally mixing it down, I spent perhaps six hours. Maybe one day I'll do one of these with more pre-planning involved, but not while I'm still using a program that doesn't even allow pitch control or crossfading. Besides, it's more fun to just dive in and let your instincts guide you.

Any comments regarding my effort is appreciated, welcome even!

i liked this one alot, i think the downbeat part is sublime done, wicked soundscapes man. you built up a great flow with the first ones but it it came down hard after you hit with the aphex sounds and the psy sounds, not that i didn't enjoy it but it was a kick in the balls at the wrong point i believe. but anyhow good shit all around

Yeah, the first 'raw' transition was intentional. I liked the idea of distorted blistering beats rudely jarring you out of the pleasantness that was a Beach Boys harmony, especially after the calm-yet-eerie downbeat section. The second one into the psy beats is quite rough though; was trying to go for a similar 'raw' transition, and probably would have worked if I had a better program to work with. Ah well.

After re-listening to this a few times, I think the only thing I'd change is to take out the MDS track. My initial thought for its inclusion was to bridge Olien and Procs with something smoother (for psy), but I think the overall flow would have been better served by getting straight into the madness that is Procs.

Also, what I wouldn't give for a volume fade.

this. mix. rocked.

just the inclusion of aphex scores huge points. the transition from the dust brothers track (great choice, I love that tune) to "tree" literally made me say "oh, shit!" as I'd just been listening to Selected Ambient Works, Vol. 2 last week. Really, really liked all the different moods/transitions/sounds - a very unsettling beginning, then it gets pretty creepy with that Beach Boys tune. I would've never pegged them as disturbing but here it was nothing but. When this picked up after Xepha, it seriously kicked my ass, and I loved how hard it got. Definitely threw me, and I was completely into it.

That Procs track is utterly evil. Huge fan.

Seriously, awesome mix.

This reminds me a lot of the "phases of a dub experience" series from Tony - not in that they're similar stylistically, but more than anything because I think they're both more programming than mix focused.

Don't really listen to a ton of this stuff, so I was pretty unfamiliar with the bulk of it, but I'll echo what's been said about the "creepiness" of it - which is definitely a quality I look for in a mix. The music fits the title exceptionally well.

Anyway, not much I can comment on from a technical point of view - but it's a great 70 minutes of music, cohesive and with direction.

Nice work.
