Internet radio charging residents?

Well, I've heard of stuff like this starting in 2007 and 2008 with some of the bigger stations. However, I've just got word of this from my own station. While I'm not affected (people who were already part of the station, and NOT new additions to the lineup), I still think it's absolutely preposterous.

Basically, for airtime, some trance radio stations are CHARGING their residents a monthly fee, from $10-20+, just to host their show. Last time I checked, anyone with a weekly internet radio show is spending several hours compiling new music, producing originals and edits to make their show as upfront as possible, and putting at least an hour recording the show, not to mention adding the vocal bits, interviews, etc.

I don't know any other business in the world that asks many hours of one's time a week, plus a weekly fee from the worker to put those hours and work in! I understand there's costs and a lot of work on the part of the internet radio owner to make it all happen. However, if these radio heads are resorting to demanding money of their residents, it's basically enough to say that they themselves have done something wrong, and should close up shop. Maybe they're wasting their time and energy doing internet radio?

I'm wondering what some of you feel about this. Some of you are DJs and can sympathize, and others not. While, like I said, my wallet is not affected, I find it hard to support and work for a station that is starting to demand a weekly fee for the resident's own hours of work into putting together the show.

Something's wrong there, right? Your thoughts....

there's precedence, some highly successful pirate radio stations in the uk and around the world started charging money for slots after they rolled out a few success stories. many of the (edm) dj's on the bbc's radio 1 and kiss fm were recruited following their success on the pirate radio stations, also, many pirate dj's developed club-careers thanks to the following they've built up through the pirate radio stations' exposure.

if internet radio stations are creating success stories in the same way, i'd say charging is justifiable on one hand, though that's not to say that i support the idea.

on the other hand, they're not losing anything by building careers, just adding to their own reputation.

Sadly these fees have more to do with licensing than getting a privy slot on some pirate station.

Some of the bigger internet radio stations run licensing bills of around 30-40 thousand USD a month if they are based in the US. These stations usually make no income from their broadcasts either.

Starting out "Geez I hope we can get this off the ground so we can spread music to everyone"

Gaining momentum "Wow people are really enjoying this and the DJs we have are really becoming commodities"

Established "Hey we can charge up and comers to offer them exposure and use the back of the people weve established as proof that you should want to pay us for your chance"

Remember people wanna charge money when their successful. Starting out they just want a foothold. Established they wanna make their money.
