Another day, another pay-for-play scandal (shhh.. now it's Hillary)

Oh snap! Could this be YET ANOTHER pay for play scandal, this time with Hillary Clinton? The hits keep on coming for President-Elect Hopeandchange. After losing one Cabinet appointment yesterday to a federal grand jury investigation of corruption, a fresh new scandal is already on the horizon with Hillary. The claim? Hillary helped put millions of dollars into the pockets of contributors to her husband’s foundation. Truly though, is anyone shocked at anything that happens with the Clintons? Nothing that happens with them is coincidence.

quote:
A developer in New York state donated $100,000 to former President Bill Clinton's foundation in November 2004, around the same time that Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton helped secure millions of dollars in federal assistance for the businessman’s mall project.

Hillary Clinton helped enact legislation allowing the developer, Robert Congel, to use tax-exempt bonds to help finance the construction of the Destiny USA entertainment and shopping complex, an expansion of the Carousel Center in Syracuse.

She also helped secure a provision in a highway bill that set aside $5 million for Destiny USA roadway construction.

The bill with the tax-free bonds provision became law in October 2004, weeks before the donation, and the highway bill with the set-aside became law in August 2005, about nine months after the donation.

Let's not forget how Bill's refusal to release donor information over the years brought questions as to whether the two were related. Now it seems clear that Hillary has at least once tailored legislation to benefit contributors to the family foundation, which benefits the political aspirations of both Bill and Hillary.

And that's not the only pay-for-play problem Hillary might bring Obama. According to The Smoking Gun, Norman Hsu's attorney promises that both Hillary and Obama will get mentioned in the fraudster’s upcoming trial:

quote:
In addition to the Rod Blagojevich pay-for-play probe, Obama could figure in the upcoming fraud trial of Norman Hsu, the disgraced Democratic fundraiser who was charged last year with operating a $60 million pyramid scheme. According to investigators, Hsu, a major Hillary Clinton fundraiser, pressured investors to donate money to political candidates with whom he was aligned. In a letter last week to U.S. District Court Judge Victor Marrero, Hsu's lawyer, Martin Cohen, requested a 60-day delay in the start of Hsu's trial, scheduled to open January 12 (Cohen cited the "extraordinary level of negative publicity" generated by the recent arrest of alleged Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff).

In his December 22 letter, a copy of which you'll find below, Cohen also noted that Hsu was already "notorious for his political activities" and that it was "inevitable" that his client's "connections" to Bill and Hillary Clinton "and other democratic notables–including perhaps the president-elect–will be introduced at trial." Before becoming a key fundraiser for Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid, Hsu co-hosted a 2005 California fundraiser for Obama's political action committee and introduced the Illinois Democrat to Marc Gorenberg, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist who later joined the Obama campaign’s national finance committee.

Seriously, Obama should have cut the Clinton cord for good. They're just going to make him look bad.

Agreed, but for different reasons.

In any case, with both Hillary and Richardson, there aren't any details other than the fact that there are allegations of impropriety. I'm taking a wait and see approach before gleefully proclaiming any wrongdoing on the part of the transition team.

Here's a little update on Richardson from The American Spectator... it discusses how the Obama team did know about Richardson's relationship with the firm being investigated.

http://spectator.org/archives/2009/...bill-richardson

quote:
The Obama transition team was aware of New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson's relationship with the firm currently being investigated, CDR Financial Products, because Richardson had introduced the firm's founder, David Rubin, to Obama fundraisers during the Democrat convention in Denver last August.

The problem is, this IS a big deal, but since Richardson dipped out it's being treated like it never happened... because Obama is too big to fail and the powers that be right now with mad-crazy media backing will not allow that to happen. The media calls it "an unfortunate distraction" but shit, where was the vetting process on this guy? There is no such thing as a Democrat scandal I guess.

Yeah, well after the nomination.

Obama Team Feels Richardson Wasn't Forthcoming About Investigation Before Being Offered Commerce

January 04, 2009 4:15 PM

Sources tell ABC News that officials on the Obama Transition Team feel that before he was formally offered the job of commerce secretary, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson was not forthcoming with them about the federal investigation that is looking into whether the governor steered a state contract towards a major financial contributor.

Once the investigation became more widely known through national media reports last month, sources tell ABC News, the Obama Transition Team realized the FBI would not be able to give Richardson a clean political bill of health before the new administration is ready to send his nomination up to the Senate for confirmation.

The Richardson camp says the governor was forthcoming, with sources close to the governor noting that there had been reports about the controversy in local media such as the Albuquerque Journal as far back as August 2008. The governor discussed the investigation with the Obama team, they say, and believes that he and his administration have done nothing wrong.

From 2004 to 2005, CDR Financial Products, a Beverly Hills, Calif.-based company founded and run by David Rubin, received nearly $1.5 million through the New Mexico Finance Authority for advising the state in a complex highway funding project pushed by Richardson. In roughly that same time period, CDR and Rubin gave approximately $100,000 to political organizations run by Richardson, including one that paid for his and his staff's expenses at the 2004 Democratic convention. Neither the grand jury nor the FBI has interviewed Richardson.

President-elect Obama did not ask Richardson to withdraw his name from consideration, sources from both camps say, but the fact that the confirmation seemed untenable in the short term was apparent to everyone involved.

There were some discussions about whether the confirmation process could be delayed a few months until the investigation concluded, sources say, but it became clear that wouldn't happen any time soon, and no one wanted to be seen as pressuring law enforcement officials to wrap up their investigation.

The governor spoke with the president-elect several times over the weekend, their last conversation being Saturday, when Richardson told Obama he was withdrawing his name from consideration

hmmm... interesting. I guess we'll never really know the truth on this. Do you think Richardson is throwing himself under the bus to protect Obama?

No, honestly I think it's probably blown out of proportion but Richardson realized he would be a political liability. The element that caught my attention is that after news of the investigation broke in the Obama camp, they were worried it would drag out the confirmation process, and this would be a good time to have a Commerce Secretary reliably in place.

Whether anything comes of the investigation I think is of little consequence - in politics perception is reality, as you've proved in this thread pretty well I think.
