the Australian Open 2009 thread

Starting tomorrow, lasting till the 1st of Feb.
Who do you think is gonna win? Who are you rooting for?

For sure it will be one of the 4 top seeds who's gonna win the men's title. I think it might be Murray's first chance to win a grandslam, if Nadal isn't fully recovered from his injury or hasn't practised a lot.

As for women's tennis.. Jankovic should have a good shot at it, if the Williams androids won't stop her.

In tennis news ....

Monica Seles was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame. She was definately at the top of her game in the early 90s. If only she was not stabbed during a match in Hamburg by a Steffi Graf fan. She would have set unprecedented records, because there were clearly no ladies near her not counting Graf.

I agree, as much as I like Murray as a tennis player, I've never seriously considered him to be a Grand Slam contender, until recently. He's had a blistering start to the new tennis season, beating Federer twice and Nadal once and is clearly the form player. Reaching the US Open final last year and winning two master's titles back to back must of given him a boost in confidence.

I'd go with Murray at least reaching the semi-finals, where the line up could be Murray - Nadal, Federer - Djokovic with Tsonga and Del Potro also in the mix.

Women's ... don't really care much.

Thank god the Brits finally have someone to root for in tennis other than that choke artist Tim Henman. Andy Murray seems to be having a lot more success than Henman.

How about that Muller-Lopez match? 16-14 5th set match. While watching it, I can tell the fans were getting restless, so they were chanting "Seven Nation Army"

//edit

i can figure why. "Seven Nation Army" is usually sung after every goal made by the Melbourne Victory, their el futbol team, and the Austrailian Open is in Melbourne. doh.

First big upset in the tournament, 2-6 6-3 7-5 in the Suarez Navarro vs Venus Williams match. Hope the other sister follows soon

+1

Suarez-Navarro played well and deserved her victory and I suppose there haven't been many other big upsets so far (if you include fat Dave Nalbandian), but with some salivating 3rd round Men's matches, I'm sure there will be a few casualties come Saturday.

Federer - Safin looks tasty.

Federer - Safin always looks like a good match. The only problem is we don't know which Safin will show up. The one who upset Federer a couple of years ago in the Australian Open in that epic 5 set match, or the one who keeps getting buried in 3-0 matches?

Aw, that was a quick exit for Safin. I didn't think Safin could upset Federer in the first place, but thought he could challenge Federer a bit more. He usually performs better at this grandslam than at the other onces, and since this probably will be his last year as pro tennisser, I thought the old Safin would revive for a bit

Gasquet-Gonzalez has got to be the match of the tournament. A lot of emotion and the crowd was really into it. Good job by both players putting all their effort into this match.
