Low Bit Rate Compression FX?

Is there an FX that can make a sound sound like its got 32kbit compression? [very low quality]

bitcrushing would have a similar sound. alternatively you could just export the sound at a lower bitdepth then reimport it.

eh, bitcrucher sounds too mechanical and not really the way low bit compression sounds, the artifacts are different, and reimporting the sounds removes most of the useability.

I think you'd want a sample rate reduction effect rather than a bit reduction effect? There must be some out there, I know battery has one built in, I think ableton maybe has one as well?

Your best bet would be to export as 32kbit.

ok, so you want it to sound like as if you exported it as a 32kbit mp3 file or similar? there are three components:

1. bit depth change (dithering)
2. sample rate change (dithering)
3. psychoacoustic processing (eg. the filtering in MP3)

to emulate this, your best bet is to use a dithering plugin and filter out high frequencies.

Is there aplace i can read up on this dithering stuff?

The main artifact I want is when you compress it at a low rate, the quality goes down a bit and you get this bubbling sound. But I obviously don't want the quality to go down for everything.
