TORONTO - March Break DJ Camp for Kids and Teens at WestsideWax!

Attention all aspiring Toronto and area DJs!
We're very pleased to be offering our Full-Day DJ Sessions for kids and teens ages 12-18, during this year's March Break (March 16-20). Normally, we only book in one or two-hour slots, but these holidays if you're out of school and chomping at the bit for something interesting to do, there's no better way to beat winter boredom than by spending a day, or even a week, behind the decks at WestsideWax!
These four-hour crash courses are designed to help young adults get familiar with a typical vinyl-based DJ setup - a great start point from which to begin learning how to play and one that is easily adapted to today's digital setups. At WestsideWax, the emphasis is on "hands-on" - expect to be spinning records within an hour of entering the studio, learning the various tricks and techniques that make DJing both fun and challenging. We provide all equipment, including records, so the only thing you need to bring is your enthusiasm!
On top of learning how to DJ, there will be discussions on the history of Electronic and Dance Music with cool videos to accompany the talks, as well as a chance to try out some of today's digital production gear. Students who sign up for 3 or more sessions will also have opportunity to record their mixes, to take home and share with friends!
Costs for the Full-Day Sessions, which run from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. and include a healthy organic vegetarian lunch, are $90/per day. Sign up for the full week to receive a special discounted rate of $380, for a savings of $70! Of course we also offer our usual subsidised rates for students with special financial considerations - please contact us for more details.
Bookings will fill up fast, and we only take a maximum of four students per session - enroll early so you don't miss out!
Of course, adults shouldn't feel left out, either - we offer lessons for all ages and all skill levels, from absolute beginners to more advanced DJs looking to sharpen their game!

About WestsideWax DJ School:
The WestsideWax DJ School is a community centred project that aims to help kids and teens ages 12 and up learn the art of storytelling on the infamous wheels of steel. And adults shouldn't feel left out - we offer lessons for grown-up kids, too!
DJing is a FUN endeavour, and also holds great therapeutic value for both the DJ and the audience. The 4/4 beat is incredibly grounding - it gets us closer to our own inner rhythm, it improves focus and helps to develop spontaneity. Did we mention the FUN part?
At WestsideWax, lessons are one-on-one (though we can accommodate two students at a time in some cases) with a DJ who has 25 years of experience under his belt, and who's also into cool stuff like Yoga, meditation, healthy eating and a maintaining a positive mindset! Classes are offered after school hours and on most weekends, and studies include turntable and mixer setup and maintenance, beatmatching, storytelling (or "programming" as some call it), EQing, cuts and other fader tricks, basic turntablism, improvisation and history lessons in electronic music. Styles of music taught will range from Techno (Detroit, European and Asian) to House (Classic Chicago, Acid, Booty and Tech-House) and Electro, and special seminars on intermediate/advanced turntablism and digital d.j.ing will be presented from time to time. Once students become proficient enough, they'll have the opportunity to record their sets, and within the next year, we plan on showcasing WestsideWax d.j.s at community events around the city, as we did at the recent Bloor-Dundas ComeUnity Festival. When the time comes we'll even help students source out bargains when buying their own new or used gear and give tips on where to go crate digging for music!
The WestsideWax studio is a modest setup made up of high quality gear, and contains everything needed to learn the art of DJing. We only use Technics turntables, with Ortofon cartridges. Our mixer is made by Allen&Heath and our awesome sound comes out of two Behringer B2031A studio monitors and a Behringer B2092A subwoofer. All vinyl is provided for lessons, and we have close to 1,000 pieces of wax to choose from!
At WestsideWax, we believe that DJing is an art that everyone should be able to learn. With that in mind, we offer rates on a sliding scale to youth from special needs families - inquire for details. Lessons are offered on an hourly basis and package deals are available as well!*
We're conveniently located right on the subway line at Bloor and Dundas West. For a free demo session or to obtain more information, email us at [email protected] or phone (416) 516-1563.
Free your mind, and get in touch with your SOUL!
