Virus TI OS3 on original TI

Hi all,

I was wondering if somebody can clarify feature upgrades with Virus TI2 and OS3? Access are bigging up the new TI2 range of synths which I must admit look awesome but what I want to know is how much of these new features can I get on my current Virus TI by just installing OS3? So a few questions:

1. Can I install OS3 on my original Virus TI? The site certainly suggests I can but there is a lot of ambiguity in advertising the new range.

2. Has anybody actually installed OS3 on the original Virus TI yet and how did this pan out? I must say installing 2.7 wasn't fantastic.

3. If OS3 works on the original TI, what are the benefits of the new range? It seems to me it is really more processing power but same features since the software is what is driving these new features.

4. Therefore is there any reason to replace the hardware other than to get something that looks slighly more slick and gives me more processing power of which I probably don't use anyway. I mean the voices is pretty much what limit the hardware in the first place.

It can be a fiddly install, best to totally uninstall Virus Control and current OS first

With the Virus TI unplugged, hold down the "Arp Edit" button, located under the "Master Volume" knob, and plugin the Virus TI. You will see two LEDs (BPM and Logo LED) start flashing back and fourth - this indicates it is ok to now let go of the "Arp Edit" button and let the TI boot. All factory parameters * will return to their original settings.

Alternately, if your TI is off via the "Sleep" fuction (both transpose buttons) - simply hold down the "Arp Edit" button, located under the "Master Volume" knob and the TI will reset.

Then install OS3

And you're right about the new virus Ti. There's little point in upgrading except for the new case/design and "25% more processing power". That's why the new one is the same price as the old one.

So that 25% is in the hardware huh? Not just software optimisations?

^^ Yeah, pretty much. Seems like Access is just refreshing their hardware to keep the TI line going and keeping the software as it is.

OS 3.0 is working just fine on my TI Polar. I've had relatively good luck with OS updates and this installed just fine, just like the update to 2.5 and 2.7.

Cool thanks for the comments all. I installed it last night. I managed to get 2 blue screens of death and the vst wouldn't initialise in Cubase few times I loaded it. After a couple of reinstalls and reboots it appears to be working now.

I'm on Cubase SX3 and Vista so maybe that had something to do with it. Anyhow the new console looks...well quite grey and not as clear as the old one but nicely set out it seems. Will have a real play this weekend.

cheers

I heard the internal DSP has been overhauled to overcome some of the earlier issues like clicks, pops, etc. For me that would be a big deal... as my experience with TI has been less than stellar.

When I use all 3 USB outs with 4+ patches I always get dropped notes, and more annoyingly the Arpeggiator going for a joy-ride (which sometimes yields unexpected and awesome results, lol). It doesn't particularly bother me though since I don't use it for live performances and can easily work around it by bouncing off to audio when it starts getting too intense.

Talk about tongue in cheek comment. Shitty architecture is shitty. Supposedly this new TI2 guts are significantly improved. Basically think of Windows 7 vs Vista. Not a free upgrade and not much difference but differences that are there may be worth paying for.

Page 35 of Snow TI manual explains voice assignment in TI and how to optimize poly. Applicable to all TI lines, as I was told.
