If you have some equipment, then you can buy Steinberg cubase VST
If no equipment then i suggest Sonic Foundry's Acid Pro 3

http://www.steinberg.net
http://www.sonicfoundry.com

Beware it cost you a lot of quid.

Or download it from Kazaa or any other filesharing program and try it for a while, and then buy it

Greetings,
Fred

Hi-

You can use Cubase or Logic Audio and then use VST instruments in it. A VST instrument is a whole synthesizer and is a lot cheaper then a hardware synth. You can use the internal effects of Logic or Cubase to compress etc. The only thing is that you need a fast computer. If your going to buy one for it, I can recommend buying the fastest one. For example I can't make a whole song with only VST instruments and internal effects on a AMD XP 1600 Mgz.
Good VST instruments are the ES-1 from Emagic (www.emagic.de)and Vaz 2010 from www.sofware-technology.com

go buy Propellerhead's Reason, it's a complete virtual recording studio with sequencer, sampler, soft synths and stuff. if you still got money, get native instrument's Reaktor too, it's a soft synth building kit (imagine lego) so to speak. they both are beasts tho, i.e. they're hard to use but once you get the hang of them, they're frighteningly powerful.
