Yeah, techno is much more of a mixer's music. With trance, unfortunately, there's not a hell of a lot you can do, unlike techno where you can multiple tracks running at once, cutting back and fourth between them.
I think a good trance set is more about track placement and phrase matching. Making sure you throw the tune in the right time so the energy nets stops. Some people think you need to give the crowd a break, but i'm the opposite. If the crowd wants a break, they can sit down, and they will anyway. The trick is to keep the intensity right up there the whole time.
Also, considering you're into techno as well, try lapping some techno over the top. I play the harder type of trance so i don't know if this will work well with normal and prog trance, but layering some techno over the top, just the mid and trebel can sound soo sweet with the right tracks. A lot easier to do if you have three decks/cdj's. Effects and samplers are fun to play with for a bit but my feeling is that a good song shouldn't need effects to make it sound good. they just get annoying after a while
