Question for Nord 3 Owners

I just received a Nord Rack 3 today and it came with a CD containing the factory patches for both the Nord 3 and the Nord 2X. As far as I know, the banks aren't interchangeable, are they? Maybe these are banks for the Nord 3 that emulate the NL2X factory banks?

The other option is that these are just the files for the NL2X, but I've owned a Nord 2X in the past and I don't recall it coming with a CD. So it seems a bit odd that Clavia would only include the factory patches for the 2X on a CD that came with the NL3.

Can someone verify? Thanks!

W00t -- adding another to the rack! I was always under the assumption that they were not compatible... but I've never tried it. Why not just try uploading the banks yourself and see?

You'll probably have to consult the manual on how to upload a bank, by the way. It's a little tricky. There's an NL3 library manager on clavia's website.

It must not blow too hard if the product isn't even supported on Crapple.

The librarian came on the CD (ew, bad choice of words) as well. I don't think I'm going to try uploading the 2X banks because I'm not too keen on screwing up my new toy. I'm pretty sure that the 2X banks are for the 2X only and not compatible with the NR3. Still seems weird that they included the 2X resources, but I believe that the two synths did overlap in terms of availability, so Clavia probably just made one resource CD and bundled it with both synths (???).

BTW - I'll have to check out your Nord 3 sounds soon.

New version coming out soon. I recently discovered using fifths in my sound design! Makes for a lot of neat possibilities. I particularly like using a fifth up on octave and very quiet.. it doesn't change the pitch at all but rather makes the sound brighter by adding over-tones. Awesome!

I'd still like to hear a comparison of the 3 and 2x.. i highly doubt there is really a huge difference.

I don't know. I owned my 2X for a long time and based on my memory of it, the Nord 3 seems to have quite a different character. I only spent a few hours tinkering with and tweaking some the presets, but in general it seems to be "bolder" sounding for leads and basses, but silkier for strings and pads compared to the 2X. The better FM capabilities makes a huge difference IMO. Also, some of the organ presets sound pretty freakin good, and I usually just skip over those.

I sold my 2X last summer and regretted it the next day, so I was just about to buy another one when I came across a great deal on my NR3. So, I decided to buy the NR3 and if I didn't like it as much as the 2X, I'd just sell the NR3 and buy a 2X. My initial reaction though is that I think I'm going to keep it, but we'll see what happens after the freshness wears off. It's a great sounding synth and I love the features that it has that the 2X doesn't have (e.g., screen, better FM, those uber-cool rotaries, the ability to mask the arpeggiator). I love how the LEDs move when you move the mod-wheel - it's so cool because you can instantly see which parameters are being modulating and how much. Awesome!

But, yeah, it would be cool to hear it next to a 2X. Maybe I'll take palm's advice and have both.
