Question So... VST is the method of the amateur???

After reading these long software vs hardware threads I came to the conclusion that the general attitude among producers seems to be that ''VSTs are for amateurs'' and that people who are serious about producing should step up the game to hardware and stop ''fooling themselves''. ''Nobody will get anywhere using with those crappy sounding soft synths''.

Is it valid to consider that a lot of companies jumped the vst bandwagon for a quick buck and a lot of those programs were poorly thought out and poory written or are people just so stuck in their ways and biases that do not want to accept new ways of working to make music?

nah, don't belive those dudes. They're full of shit.

Lots and lots of songs are released with sounds provided by soft synths, even major commercial releases. Plus, do you really think someone will think "derp this song sucks cos there is no analog"?

i think it all comes down to having the choice. there is plenty off crap hardware out there and crap software vsts.
with a daw of ones preference and some synths/vsts can only make for people being a step closer to edm heaven.

How the hell did you come to this conclusion

If anything, the "put your money where your mouth is" thread proved that Sylenth et al sound just as good as a Virus. Analog synths, I can't speak for though...

Anyone who says software is for amateurs is a retard, especially if they are on this forum - let's face it, no one on this forum, other than LOLO and Icone have reached "pro status". Ironically, both these guys use mostly software AFAIK?

Regardless, would you call Eric Prydz amateur? Because all he uses is an old laptop, Logic 5 and Korg Legacy Collection... What about Laidback Luke? All he uses is FL Studio and Kjaerhaus plugins. The Prodigy? All they used was Reason. Most hits are made in software... Period.

Its not "the general concensus" among producers. If anything it has to do with teh attitude of hardware salesmen and representetives. Alot of people who have something to gain by promoting hardware, say shit like this, and tools like alanzo go around repeating what they heard. Even visiting music stores, people who sell software liek Cubase and such, reidcule you for using Reason or FLStudio, because they probably get a bonus for selling Cubase. For example. Its all in an effort to make it seem like "our" product is best. And when it comes to hardware, people tend to use the "hardware sounds better" angle..despite the fact that hardware is absoutly horrible in every other aspect. And yeah, some people will say that you need hardware to be serious. Ive had a guy look me in the eye and say only serious musicians use Protools + Triton...trying to sell me a triton.

TBH.. i have a Moog.. and i one patch will fit absolutely everything i feed it too. I could use this one forever! yeah its true.

But its bullshit still, you can make everything sound just as good using only software, listen to Airwave and Daniel Kandi got instance.

Echosystem: Prydz makes mostly "will sell 1000+ copies anyways" house music. and Prodigy used Reason to make Always Outnumbered.. , but still sampled most of the bass from a Roland SH 101.

Music is about judgement and skill anyways.

But software people should not underestimate the power of physical gear and vica versa.

I really hate to get into one of these threads...there are so many heavily defended personal opinions...

What is interesting is that not many people seriously say "Cubase and Logic have a terrible sound" or "Viruses and Nord Leads are horrible sounding VA synths".

It seems when it comes to defending products, saying that "these products DON'T sound bad", the above examples don't seem to require anyone defending them. It's just something I've noticed.

There are indeed fantastic software synths and effects. And there have been fantastic songs made with Reason and FL.

If your songs are sounding fantastic, then great. it doesn't matter what anyone says. Your songs sound fantastic, end of discussion.

But it would be good to keep an open mind about all the options open to you - whether you're defending hardware, software, a particular DAW, synths, samplers or romplers. It may be that it's not the optimal tool for you personally, and you may spend a lot of time trying to make it do what you want it to do.

I have a beautiful set of hardware and software tools, but I don't hold any of them too tight. If something comes along tomorrow which enables me to improve what I do, I don't want to miss that opportunity because I'm too heavily invested in what I currently have.

Well, look.. so many of my favorite Anjunabeats producers/composers use at least 75% "software" instruments and their tracks are still fucking awesome! But, I do feel that if these artists used a better instrument, such as a Nord Lead 3 or Andromeda, their tracks would be even better.
