NI being slow to answer, so maybe someone here knows ...

I never met a 'challenge' when registering Komplete 5 Crossgrade and/or installing it to prove that I had another NI product. Nothing asking for the other product's serial, or otherwise.

This typical for other people? Wondering if I can use Komplete 5 Crossgrade standalone and get rid of the other.

A crossgrade only applies to you purchasing the product and typically consists of you showing a proof of purchase of another product to get the crossgrade price. For example, I was able to get a crossgrade of Cubase 4 by showing my sales receipt of Live 6. There's no entering of other serial numbers during installation or anything. So in this case, go ahead and install Komplete 5!

I just had a similar situation. I ordered the Kontakt 3 crossgrade from Sweetwater and was never asked to provide proof of my eligible software. I haven't received it yet, so I can't answer the OP's question regarding registering it, but as No Left Turn already mentioned, the few crossgrades I've purchased in the past simply required some sort of proof at the time of purchase. Once I received the product, it was essentially the same as having purchased it brand new.

Please post and let us know what information if any you are asked for when installing kontakt 3.

I have a geuine copy of Kontakt 2 and I'm considering the upgrade however I was put off by not knowing what infromation I would be required to provide.
