Car rental question

Renting a minivan for this weekend to travel to D.C. and back (abt 2,000 kms).

Going with Enterprise which has a nice, generous unlimited kms policy if it stays within Ontario, with strict rules that "the vehicle is not to travel in the U.S."

I spoke to someone at the spot near my house and already mentioned D.C. so he wanted to sell me a more expensive package and limit the km's so I said well, I've changed my mind and we're travelling to Timmins, Ontario, LMAO.

Obviously he doesn't believe me but he sounded like a kid and he may not be there on Friday when I pick it up, but just as a precaution I booked the same vehicle with another location as well as a different carrier (Discount).

I'm wondering what's the worst thing that can happen if I take the car across the border? Would the rental place contact border security? Are the vehicles tracked by GPS? Anyone with any experience on this issue...

The cars are tracked with a high tech GPS system that as soon as the wheels touch American soil the C4 charges in the car will go off sending it backwards into Canada.

Whenever I drive to New York, I always rent with Hertz. They don't care if you go across and there's unlimited kilometers.

Also, I've asked specifically about this at Hertz too. i.e. If there was special documentation I need or anything. They basically just said I may have to show them the registration and/or my car rental papers. So if the border guards ask you for the documents, it may say on there that you can't cross the border, and then you'd be out of luck.

Well....the worst thing that could happen is that you get into a car accident in the US where you put the other person into a coma for 20 years. The Rental company would usually cover the liability upto their limits but since the vehicle shouldn't have been there they probably would only pay the lowest limit of legal liability. which could be as low as 30,000.00. You would be responsible for the rest of the legal liability, which could run into the millions of dollars.....but I wouldn't worry....its a worse case scenario

As stated above, insurance liability is really the only risk you are running. I've rented from Enterprise many times, and have taken the car to Quebec and other provinces, never with any problems.

You should just go to Timmins!!!

That's my suggestion.

You run into the problem if anything happens to the car like an accident or it gets stolen. You basically void all insurance.

I got a car rental flyer with my American Express bill sometime ago for 1 week Pontiac Grand Am rental for $149.99.

March Break was coming up and instead of putting mileage on my Dodge Daytona, it seemed cheaper renting the car, especially since AMEX picked up the extra car insurance portion.

When I went to pick it up with my gf, I said I wanted to drive to Buffalo for some US shopping. The old guy behind the counter said fine and wrote "OK for US Driving" on my car rental agreement, which both of us kept a copy. My car turned out to be a sparkling V6 Grand Am with only 550km on the odometer.

One week later, I was glad to see a younger girl behind the counter. I returned the car with nearly 12,000km on the odometer, and some sand from the Florida's finest beaches.

I've rented cars many a time and traveled with the rental to all parts of the US. It was with enterprise as well. I would call their customer care centre not the individual store. It sounds like this guy may be trying to squeeze more money out of you.

I'm not sure about the GPS technology but I have always rented from National and they have unlimited kms. I've taken it to Florida and Buffalo and it was never a problem.

I've never really had a problem from then and they take air miles. I beat the shit out of them as always and the rates are pretty decent. I've been renting them for about 6 years now. Even more so after I turned 25... they used to charge me $25 a day for an under 25 (age) fee. So stupid but whatever im over that now.
