San Francisco: Job Climate

I'll be graduating (hopefully) very soon. Afterward, a friend and I are thinking of moving to San Francisco in the coming months.

My degree is in Computer Science, and I had some information about a position in Oakland (ideally would like to be in the city, though). I am definitely unfamiliar with the place but will be visiting in a few weeks to decide if the move will be productive.

Any thoughts and feedback are appreciated. Thanks.

The job market is not what it was but it's still decent for the tech industry if you're qualified. I just spent a few months unemployed but am on more than one opportunity now. I'm not sure I would just move here without a job if you don't have a lot of cash but if you can get an offer in Oakland that would be fine. Oakland isn't the greatest but close enough to either live somewhere else and commute on the weekdays or live there and commute somewhere for fun on the weekends. :P But there is definitely a lot of fun, as in electronic music events, going on in Oakland as well, I've been to some crazy parties there.

Take what you can for the time being, IMO. Even though I was laid off myself after nearly nine years at my last job in SF, the Bay Area is actually doing better overall than the rest of California. But I know a lot of people who have been hit hard just recently between lay offs, cut back hours, etc etc.....think the Bay Area's overall luck is about to run out...

If you miss an opportunity, another may not come for awhile.

The Lake Merritt area of Oakland is cool. Pretty diverse neighborhood and even if you worked in Oakland and lived in SF, you could take the local train, BART, and be there in less than 30mins. Check to see how close the place is to a BART station. If it's close, sell your car and take the job. You dont need a car in SF. IMO is more hassle than it's worth unless you live in the Sunset or thereabout. BTW, you can find some great deals in the sunset. I knew someone that had a one bedroom in a converted place for $900. a month. She even had a private patio. That's a great deal BTW. Expect to pay about $1500 for a one bdrm. You can be within 20-30min drive from SF with a decent 2bdrm for the same price.
