creating melodies: Is it just me. . .?

. . . or does everyone else think that creating a melody for your choons is the hardest part? I am great with coming up with a driving kick/bass line, as well as progressing it, but i just suck at creating melodies. . . I always seem to trash my melodies cause they sound too close to choons that are already out there. . .sometimes they sound like tracks ive never even heard before. . .

Im not really sure where to go from here. . .any suggestions would be appreciated

greets,
Matrix

you should learn something about music theory/chord progressions. It will definitely help out. do you play the keyboard/any formal training on it?

yeah, i consider myself fairly knowledgable in chord progressions, as i studied music for 5 years (I play violin, viola, cello, and a few woodwind instruments as well. and i know HOW to play piano/keyboard )

I just find that when i do create melodies, they seem like cheesy ripoffs of already produced melodies.
I was just wondering if anyone had any tips that might help me out.

might be a long shot. . .

oh well, thanks anyways

I think each of us has problems with different stuff (That's what collaborations are for ), so I guess yours is melody (Mine's Kicks and some "Rushing" HHs...), which doesn't mean it sux in the end, it means you need to put more time and thinking into it till it rox. So keep at it, You can either think of the feel you want to give and then produce the actuall patterns or vice versa...

Yeah, it's really hard for me...
Esp. because I have a breakbeat background... and breakbeat doesn't really lean on melodies.

That's why me & my friend formed Outsource - I can concentrate on drums/bass and he can do the synth stuff... though that doesn't mean I'd never do synths or he'd never do drums...

I can get a good melody in my head, but find it hard to transfer it to the FLP piano roll.

Re: creating melodies: Is it just me. . .?

finding melodies isn't the hardest part for me, but I'm always trying to make creative touches that can differ your tunes from the ones already out there.

if one of your melodies that are really good, sound a bit like a tune out there, try to add some twists to it, or add another synth on top of it, so that people get a different impression on the track that way.

Composing the whole track is always the most difficult part though
take care,
Wim/LW

lets be sure about one thing: this shit is hard. but, i have an advice for ya, donīt TRY to create a melody, it will never work, you canīt just come up with a great melody just like that, Donīt TRY just DO when you feel it in your soul and heart.
