I have a pair of ATH-m50's (coiled cable) which I use for my PC. They're comfortable and sound pretty decent- you could definitely use them for DJing. I'd say they're pretty comparable to the Senn 280's in terms of comfort and sound, but I don't have any on hand to compare against.

I've owned 2 pairs of ath-m40fs's for about 12 1/2years. Bought both before the price reduction, so they costed me about 100 each. To me, they sounded way better/clearer/detailed than anything else in the price range. They will last a long time. I've done many DJ gigs with them, and made many beats with these headphones. My first pair went from 1998 to about 2003 or so. -I loaned those to a friend, and I don't know how the hell he did it, but he broke them. -After all the abuse I put them thru everything still worked fine untill he touched them. I bought another pair right away, and these ones are still going strong.
My bro has the 50's, those are a step up. deeper bass, better detail, and are more comfortable for extended listening sessions because the earcups are a little bigger, so they don't sit on my ears like the 40's do.
The vinyl covering will desintegrate over time, so you'll get little black pieces of vinyl stuck to your face, ears, and head or in your hair.
I like the swirly cord of the 50's... It stays out of my way. I never liked the straight cord of the 40's. I have it tied up, but a lot of times it's either too short or too long, and have to wrap it up more, or loosen it up...
The ath-m40's are not as swivelable or fashionable as the sony's, but these will not fall apart on you, that's for sure. They are easy to drive, so you will never have a problem w/a dj mixer w/a headphone amp too weak to get good volume level in the cans. (as I will have when my HD-650's get here)
Soon I'll be picking a pair of 50's, and just keep the 40's as a back up, and for gig's. Seriously, for the price they are going for now, you'd be straight retarded not to buy them.
