Hi !

The poll : how much would you pay for working yourself in professional studio with high-end hardware and software (per day, week, month) ?

Cheers !

Probably about 150-200E a day. That's the bare minimum I would need to earn in order to be able to support myself fully. At 150E a day it would be 1700E a month after all income tax has been deducted.

Edit: I miscalculated a bit. I should make 600E a week to get to the 1700E a month which comes down to about 120E a day. But that would be the bare minimum.

Isn't the question how much are you willing to pay to use a "high end" studio?

first of all this depends on how you define "High End" 60 channels of SSL, Bricasti, NEVE & API outboard & TAD monitoring sounds high end to me. A MAC with a euphonics controller and some WAVES software isn't. also how many booths?!? including or excluding engineer(s) ?!?

Studio prices are cheap as hell at the minute. Around £15 - £25 an hour to use a high-end studio with neve desks or similar with engineer included.

exactly and i would only go there to track REHEARSED vocals, or track acoustic instruments (being in/out within 1 hours)

unless you need to track your band and you can't mix you no longer really need a studio once you've finished tracking.

I disagree... I'm POSITIVE that mixing down on a nice SSL console will sound better than a bounce out of a software mixer. Correct though that you probably don't NEED it.

im actually working for a few studios now in LA.

the going rate absolute CHEAPEST amount is 250$ a day without the assistant engineer included... Now getting the studio to let you use the room without an assistant engineer goodluck! you can tack on another 10-20$ an hour to that fee.

And it 's still incredibly cheap. Most people don't work for less than 50$ an hour in my country.oops, so imagine an engineer who paid 6 000+$ for his SAE training and grade. Those guys need to eat too.

Snap - I work in a studio in LA too. Rates in general at pro studios have dropped to unbelievably low levels but the major ones still command high daily rates. Also, a lot of studios charge depending on what you use there. For instance some will give a certain amount of PTHD rigs for the rate but to use more (effectively channel count) you pay extra.

Often you pay for the expertise that comes with that studio. You got to a top studio and pay good money, you're going to get top talent (assistants, 1st's/ mix engineers etc.).

Smaller project studios (still "pro" working studios) will virtually negotiate all the time, especially for down time. Middle of the night or very early morning around other paying projects will get you even better rates. Also, if you make it a regular (like twice a month) will get you better rates too.

i am one of those engineers who paid 6k for his training but I went to MI haha

i find what works for me is to bring clientle to a studio and take my own rate though... instead of just working under a studio for like 10$ an hour.

that way wherever I go, my work goes, and i have built strong relationships with the artists.
