Re: Breakins etc...

Do you have your equipment insured under your renter's or homeowner's insurance? If not, I'd do that right away. I have my equipment insured under my homeowner's policy, an alarm (keeps the insurance costs down), and a large "Beware of Dog" sign on the gate leading to the back entrances of my house.

Yeah, you really got watch out for them 30-35 year-olds, that's the age when you just start breaking into houses.

BTW - if that counts as old, I must qualify as dead.

People hanging around sounds like casing houses especially that kit in your nieghbours garden. Blocked off in traffic? - try living in LA - you'd have a paranoid meltdown

The lock paint chipped on the inside could be a result of movement. Created by someone trying to jimmy the lock from the outside (basically the lock housing rubbing on the paint from playing with the outer/external housing).

Get at least some window/door stickers saying you got an alarm system, get the dog sign, maybe a fake/real camera. At least these will show that you're on to them. Other than that real deterrants such as a real alarm, a dog, electrified fences, proximity explosives are the only real way to protect.

Seroiusly, theives are afraid of getting caught and most are opportunists so just show that there is security and show clearly it's not going to be an easy job for them and they will think twice.

I'm imagining that coming home and finding your doorknob/lock fixture pried is a little scary. I wouldn't think, however, that thieves, trying to break into your home would go to the trouble of mounting a probing reconnaissance (cutting you off in traffic) of your "defensive" driving habits. If there's a conspiracy afoot, there's more to this story than simple thievery.

As for people in yours and your neighbor's back-yards - have you spoken with your neighbors? Maybe they were having some work done to their home or are curious about the people, themselves.

What city/country is this? What kind of neighborhood do you live in (Upscale/suburban/gated/et al)? Is your rig so loud it attracts unwanted attention? Are you a well-known musician (or a well known anybody) in your area? Who are your friends and acquaintances?

I guess I'd probably be alarmed if that stuff was happening to me, too. I'd definitely have the digital camera out and be doing recon of my own.

Seriously, if you think of it like this. You are never going to stop a professional theif. It's what they do and most forms of deterant that the likes of your or me could afford are not going to stop a determined effort.
That said, the measures that have been measured are sound and would prevent opportunists from striking.

If nothing else, get the insurance sorted and further more, make sure that you create back ups etc. and store them somewhere else so that if things did come to the worst then at least you wouldn't have lost the really valuable stuff i.e. your creative efforts and things that can't be replaced.

cheers
Nem

Excellent point - that one can't be stressed enough. Which reminds me, I'm long overdue for backing up my projects.

You probably aren't.

They aren't afraid of dogs, because most of them are harmless.

They will learn your household's habits. Then they will come in with some kind of household service truck to look less suspicious or they will steal your ride. If they set off the alarm, they will be gone WITH your stuff before the alarm company can even contact you, and before you can even contact the police.

I bet cryo has some good stuff.
