In this video, two of Australia's most important social critics analyse how "the Secret" operates, using an empirical method.
I'm surprised that, even though this has been a ubiquitous topic in popular culture, there's no discussion whatsoever about "The Secret" here yet. It's spawned a plethora of books, documentaries and therapies, all based in a single premise: ask — believe — receive (although there are disagreements within the school of secrecy). Certainly the CORe would be incomplete without an extensive debate on such fundamental principles of how stuff works.
The video embedded in this page highlights the most important features of "The Secret", so I'm not going straight to the point: Why the hell do people buy it? And, when I say "buy", I do mean it, literally. People have flocked to purchase their own copies of "The Law of Attraction" and "The Super Mega Extended Secret".
Metaphysics aside, it does make some sense (even if minimal). You can't achieve something if you're not trying, that's common sense. Also, you hardly notice things when you're not paying attention to them. Fans often say that geniuses are able to convey the deepest truths as if they were obvious. However, this has been said over and over by lots of people, and this so-called secret is far from being mysterious. Why is it popular, then?
It seems to "Harry Potterise" the world. It adds magic to people living dull lives, talking about "psychological magnetism", "the omniscient universe" and... "secrets". It's borderline absurd, at times, and the Australian critics of the school of the Chaser, currently declaring war on everything, pointed that out brilliantly.
But, if it makes people move their arses and do stuff they want, can it be considered a bad thing at all? Not really, but does this actually give people an extra push, or is it just an excuse to sit down and daydream? Can it have a negative impact? Have you seen people drowning in a parallel world full of unicorns, midgets and illusions because of this?
Have your say

Why do people buy it? Because they're fucking sad and lazy, and can't figure out their own "secret" for success. Also, common sense is not at all common anymore.

But, is it a bad thing? Is it a sign that, although people are sad and lazy, they're trying to do something for a change? Or is that an excuse to keep arsing around?

It's alright if people understand that the world comes to men of action, not men of mere thoughts, words, or ideas. I think shit like "The Secret" appeals to the lowest common denominator...so it's probably really only giving them false hope.

Read like 80% of the book but then I recieved a copy of I am America ( & So Can You) So I'm reading that now.
The Secret is really good. I think reading it makes me think differently and want to change how I am. But if I'm not reading the book I'm a super bitch and super complainy!

That's interesting, Mel.
Does the book make you complain less, then? If so, why? And do you work more after (or while) reading it?

No, don't do it Really, tables weren't designed for that purpose, and it gives you a lot more headache in the long run. As a matter of fact, if you do try to use tables here, you're going to have a sad surprise...

My father saw it when he was at the climax of a nervous breakdown and it "saved his life." Now he feels bad that none of the rest of the family wants to join his hogwash army.
As mentioned above, I think it appeals to the people in the slums and makes people grateful for small little gifts life brings them (shifting credit from the random of life to the law of Attraction).

Well things have gone pretty good in my life.
When I first moved alot of bad things were happening to me.
-My car got broken into
-Car batter died!
-Fired from my first job EVER
Now I can say I am happier. I want to read it twice so it can sink in.
Whether it's true or not.. It's still a great read. I'm a sucker for sappy movies and I like reading how people turned their life around. I'm all about Happy Endings
Obviously my life isn't shit and was never really shit compared to others. It's hard though to stay positive all the time.
Like the section about money is a bit ridiculous. But some people just always have a positive outlook on life! [I am not one of them]. I can't see a late payment and think something good about it. Especially if I don't have the money to pay for it atm. They want you to constantly think prosperity.
