Yes, I don't agree with Ableton's revenue model. The makers of the other sequencers I own (Propellerheads - Reason and Steinberg - Cubase) seem to have much more significant changes between versions. It seems that Live is upgraded every single year, whether there's good cause for it or not. They just release the new version with whatever they've managed to work on in the meantime. I'm still on version 5, which does what I want it do fine, rewired into Cubase. At some point if I feel it is different enough, I'll just pay for the full version again (I'm sure someone will post a really long list of all the "massive, fundamental" new features that have been introduced in the meantime....) Already it's cheaper for me to do that than to upgrade.
On the other hand, good luck to them. They're a business, and they want to make money. Businesses need to make money. The current system is working well for them, it would seem. And version 5 is working well for me.

i think apples & oranges here. Ableton came onto the scene not as a production tool, more of a live integration tool. It has slowly developed into what it is and as more people ask for more features for both live use & production use ableton is forced to do a huge amount of work. Cubase and most others can focus on just being 1 thing, Ableton really has 2 large groups of consumers seeking different but similar end results.

if you consider step record, vocoder, the new dynamics processors, the new operator, the new warping engine, and the license for the new complex-pro alogrithm not an upgrade, then I wonder what you'd need exactly, what your wishes are.
The upgrade fee (149€) only annoys me, it's slightly too expensive, probably due to the license that Ableton have to pay for. They didn't develop the warping engines, those are coming straight from Z-plane. And I think it costs thousands of euros.
So, let's not blame Ableton too quickly like I did on their forums earlier this year.
And besides that, many people in this industry, artists of ours are still releasing entire albums that they made with illegal copies of Live, claiming they have no money, then they buy 2000$ laptops for e-mail and facebook. I won't give you names, but this behaviour really makes me sick. This is why indie developers such as Ableton must charge their legal customers so much money.
I wish all developers could work together on a monthly-subscription system. That should be fair enough so anyone could afford that damn thing.
I'll upgrade this weekend as after all I am quite happy with the new features. Lil bit pricey, but still less than 10% of my Korg X3 back in 1994 :-)
