so im finally buying all my own equipment this week and im not sure whether to buy traktor or serato? i've been using serato on a weekly basis when i've been dj'ing with my friend and its simple enough to use. But i feel like traktor would give me more options.... any feedback?
and what is the difference between the new traktor pro and traktor duo?
oh and sorry if there are 1000 threads about this

Compromise with Torq.

What Genre do you mostly play.
What do you want from your DVS system? Simple beatmatching with a few loops and cue points.
Or would you prefer, multiple deck (4) looping, cueing, effects etc..
I know for some people if they're not that pushed about effects and lengthy layering of loops etc that serato is completely satisfactory for them.
In my opinion Serato is also a lot easier to set up. There is less tweaking. Traktor can take a little longer to 'figure' out and get working the way you want it to.
Money is also a factor as one is cheaper. Depending on which Traktor option you go with of course.
You've obviously gone to their websites and checked out what features each product has? Is there anything that you see as being necessary or anything that you think you would like but probably wont use?

i personally chose serato scratch just becuase of its simplicity...i have fx on my djm700, and i barely even use that.
i wanted a no frills dvs and serato was just that

im gonna be playing a mix of house, deep house and techno (mostly) and equipment wise i have the djm 400 and 2 cdj 400's
i've been lookin at traktor scratch duo which is only two decks which i believe is fine for what i wanna do
i guess i just feel like traktor gives you more control over mixing and gives you more features

Hmmm Tough call..
If you're just going for duo, i personally would probably go for Serato (this is coming from someone who has Traktor Scratch Pro)
Reason being if you're not going to get the full blown capabilities of the effects that traktor has to offer and you're only going for 2 decks. Then the simplicity as I got big pants said and the stability of serato is really appealing.
Then again the looping capabilities of Traktor might come in handy for the music you play.
I dunno, it's a toss up in my opinion.
I'd probably go for Serato as you have some effects on the djm400.
You've been able to play around with Serato, what have you thought about it so far? Is there anything you're not happy about?

It depends, some people are saying it isn't as big an update as they thought it was going to be but then it is suppose to be the foundation of what might come of Serato's partnership with ableton.
So if you're happy with how Serato works at the moment and don't really see yourself upgrading to whatever they might come out with in the future, you're pretty safe with SL1/2, but if you want to future proof yourself you're probably better off getting the Sl3.
Only thing i'd say is that if you're getting the Sl3 you're going to spending quite a bit of money, quite a bit more than Duo.. (don't quote me as i haven't looked up prices).
I personally wouldn't purchase the SL3, not yet anyway until i knew what Serato and Ableton are going to come out with.
What you could do is look for Serato second hand. You're literally just paying for the box so you could probably find it for a steal.
That way you've got your DVS system. Buy yourself some new control vinyl/cd's.
Wait for a while until you see what Ableton and Serato come out with and then you can either upgrade or if you fancy a little change, switch over to Traktor..
I used Serato for 2-3 years, fancied a change and have been using TSP for 7 months now. Enjoyed using both, if i were starting again i'd start with Serato.
(Ps. i bought serato second hand when i bought it and was able to sell it for roughly the same price i paid for it)

I agree with n3lly. Native Instruments really protect their software against piracy while Serato let you download anything on their website, well more towards SL 3 softwares.

Don't get me wrong, Traktor sort out those who purchase their product. They've been continuously updating their software (which has been necessary only because they haven't ironed out a lot of the problems they probably should have had ironed out before it got released)
But it's finally nice and solid (for me anyway) and any future updates will hopefully just increase it's stability.
Serato do have free updates though and this has always been a great selling point. They're also on the ball when it comes to looking after their customer base. They have a great forum with loads of expereince and support.
