For The Laptop DJ's: Glossy Or Matt Screen?

I'm getting a 17" MacBook Pro soon and they give you the option of a glossy or matt screen, with the matt screen being about £30 more.

Seeing as though a MacBook Pro is a big investment I want to make sure I make the right choice.

So my question is, do any DJ's on here have any opinions on matt or glossy screens?

I'm asking as there are some upsides and downsides to having the standard glossy screen.

Upsides - Looks great....ermmmm I think that's about it, but it does look really great. As I will be using this for media purposes as well, I would like this feature.

Downsides - Reflections. I have DJ'd in clubs with a glossy screen laptop before and if there are lights going off all over the place then it can be a pain in the ass looking at what's on the screen. The same thing for DJ'ing outdoors during the day, I can remember it being rather difficult.

Do you find glossy screens a problem? Would you get rid of the glossy one for an extra £30?

Any views welcome.

get the matte screen. Glossy is fucking annoying and the charm will wear off very quickly.

I have read over the internet (so it must be true), that the glossy screen on the MacBook Pro actually has the better visibility, even in light, than the matte screen

I went with glossy, and it looks fantastic. Really, I haven't had much trouble. I don't like to CONSTANTLY stare at the screen when I DJ, anyway.

I'm happy with my choice.

Neither do I. But on my old laptop the reflections proved a problem, even with brief glances. Upon further reading, the Apple glossy screens seem to be quite different from the rest, no idea how though. I think I'm swinging towards the glossy one to be honest.

My Dell laptop has a matte screen and my Macbook has a glossy one, and there is a noticeable difference between them in a club as I have played with them both. However, it's not enough to sway my decision because I love my glossy screen and it hasn't been enough of a hindrance to really be a problem.

Your views have given me some confidence over the glossy screen, cheers.

The brightness of the macbook screen > the brightness of indirect sunlight. The screen is seriously blindingly bright in a dark room, such as a dark club environment. Plus, you usually have a power supply @ the club so you dont need to worry about battery life.

Can't speak for their laptops, but at work I use a 24" iMac + a 24" cinema display, both glossy. They're not bad, but reflections/glare from 48 inches of mirror-sheen screen can get a bit annoying. Still prefer matte.

Agreed... the brightness is very good on the LED-backlit display, so that definitely helps.

I thought that all the New Macbooks had the Glossy screen :S

I was in the same situation and i opted for the glossy and i have no complaints. The screen looks good. The only time i imagine there would be a slight problem would be if there was a big light shining on it at the same angle you were looking at or the sun beating off it. Any screen would be hard to look at in this condition.

like somebody said (depending on the application) you shouldn't look at the screen all that much while DJing anyways

The old ones do, but on the new Macbook Pros you have the option of having a matte one. I'm not to sure whether they have this option on the ordinary Macbook's though.

Looks like a glossy screen is the way forward .
