What exactly does "programming your set mean?"
Is this figuring out your song choice in a certain order before presenting or what ?

choosing song selection and transitions works best with ableton. Doing it with cdjs just gives you that live feel.

it's a fancier word for the trackselection. you should know your tracks so you know what should go where and how to play the mix out for the best result.

I remember when I was younger (I'm only 20) I remember reading somewhere, that dj's are supposed to "read" the audience and choose track selection off hand?!? Does this ring a bell? So it seems people "program their sets" these days. Do people still try to read the audience etc...

Yeah thats about right. Programming is good for only promo mixes.

It seems as though alot of big names program their sets, before playing it out to an audience.

It goes both ways.

You can read the audience, but if you read and think too hard, you might just not know what to play next.

I just go with the flow when it comes to spinning live. Test out a few tracks, maybe one or two and go from there.

that is bullshit because you can program on the fly it doesn't have to be pre programmed

The only time I ever pre programmed was my first set in public because I was very nervous.
