External Drives For a Mac.....

So I bought a really cheap seagate drive when I first got my imac, and it turns out YGWYPF.

The damn thing sleeps every time you're not actively using making logic stop until the drives spins back up. There's no fix for it unless you're a PCer, so time to get a new drive and retire it as a back up disk.

I've always used LaCie at work, and even though they're great, they're a tad expensive for me - was wondering if anyone can advise/tell about less expensive but relaible drives they use for an Imac. Preferably firwire but can also do usb.

Thanks!!!

Why waste money on a special drive when you can just get a bog-standard hard drive and a Firewire/USB enclosure? I've never had one of those spin down either - they're subject to whatever power management rules you already have set up on the system.

I have the same problem with my Western Digital drive. Absolute piece of shit. There's no way to disable it either. I would just get an external case and put a HDD in it.

Western Digital here. Their usb models tend to sleep a lot, but I'd rather have that than 5 lacie drives crashed with defective sectors in the last 2 years. No more lacie, no more maxtor for me. Performance isn't what matters the most. Data safety is.

I guess nobody really payed attention to the post from Diginut, but he is right. The problem lies in power management. You can setup USB in a way, that when not used active, it will cut the power till you use it again (I believe this is the default setting).
