Tell me how this setup is

Hey guys. Just ordered a new computer and I already got confirmation that it's good from somebody who both deals with computers in his job and produces music, but just to be sure I wanted to ask you.

Here is the setup:

-Antec Three Hundred Mini Tower Gaming Case
-Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB 7200RPM 32MB
-Western Digital Velociraptor WD1500HLFS 150GB SATA 10000RPM 5.5MS 16MB
-Acer X203HBD 20IN LCD Widescreen Monitor
-ASUS P6T X58 ATX LGA1366 DDR3 3PCI-E16 PCI-E1 2PCI CrossFire SLI SATA2
-Intel Core i7 920 Quad Core Processor LGA1366 2.66GHZ Bloomfield 8MB
-OCZ Gold OCZ3G1600LV6GK 6GB DDR3 3X2GB DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 CL 8-8-8-24 Triple Channel Memory
-Microsoft Windows XP Professional
-Syba SD-PEX-FWB 2 Port 1394B & 2 Port 1394A (1 Internal) Firewire Controller
-Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme 1366RT Heatpipe Cooler
-Corsair TX650W 650W ATX 12V 52A 24PIN ATX Power Supply
-Samsung SH-S222A/BEBS 22X DVD+-RW IDE DVD Writer
-EVGA E-GEFORCE 9800GT 55NM 600MHZ 512MB 1.8GHZ 256BIT GDDR3 Dual DVI-I HDCP HDTV Out Video Card
-Yate Loon D12SL-12 120MM RED/BLACK Fan 1350RPM x3

Main thing I'm worried about is that I won't be able to get the full speed out of that Velociraptor hard drive due to motherboard restrictions. On the other hand this is a very new motherboard so I didn't think there would be any issues.

Also, I'm aware that XP will not let me use the computer to its full potential. Does anybody here produce on a system that's running Vista? I just don't want any compatibility/reliability issues.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated. I'm obviously going to be using this to make some music, so I thought posting here would make sense.

Thanks

I'm working on the same thing, but with a rack-mount chassis instead of a tower.

Glad you posted this. It could be interesting...

I think the setup looks cool so far. I would recommend buying your parts from newegg.com. Not only do they have cheap prices but they often off free shipping!

I also produce and DJ with my laptop running vista. it's working pretty well so far, you just have to tweak it a bit. That includes disableing those annoying popups.

edit: i just realized your from canada. might want to check out that shipping thing. I'm from the US so i'm not sure

Yea I got shipping for pretty much free. 6 bucks actually so I don't mind. Only thing is I'm planning to use pro tools, and that only works on a 32 bit operating system. So I'm gonna go with regular XP for now, and upgrade to Vista 64 when pro tools does.

Protools will only work if you are using M-Audio gear or Digidesign gear. And why on earth would you want to use Protools?

How important for a DAW is it to get the faster higher performance hard drive in addition to a regular hard drive? Does putting all your apps on the Velociraptor make that big of a difference? I'm actually looking to upgrade to a similar setup but I'm not sure if its worth it to get two separate hard drives....

Get Window XP 64bit, I wouldn't downgrade to Vista unless you are very very sure you need to. Or you wait for Windows 7, but I doubt it will be any better than Vista in terms of stability and compatibility., but I guess we'll see.

If you don't need Crossfire or SLI perhaps you can opt for a slightly cheaper mobo?

If you want a fast HD and have some extra cash to spend, why not look for a decent SSD?

If you want a more silent system, than maybe opt for a different PSU (not that Corsair PSUs are bad). Some good ones could be Antec NeoPower 650 (since you're planning on buying an Antec case) or Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 650W.

I don't know if XP would limit you for music production. I always found my PC faster with the same setup using XP - but that's just my 2cents...

Cheers

you still haven't mentioned what you will be doing with it.

there are a few features i would really not recommend. Again i can't help you unless you are more specific. I think you could probably get something that does what you want for alot less.

some of those specs are actually slightly retarded. 6 gigs of ram and the xp bit being one of them. THe hardrives , unless you are making orchestral based music, won't really help. Your video card is over kill. Anything with SLI is always a bad idea with audio as those boards do anything they can do make video the most important thing. they will make sure your video cards get all the bandwidth they need and then some.

I could go on but i'm tired. Your friend has given you some pretty bad advice so far . Unless you are a gamer than wants to produce in his spare time. Again , you don't specify so it is really hard to answer your question.
