Cirque du Soleil 'Ovo'

I went to see Ovo last weekend, my third Cirque show, all of which I saw in Mtl. It is billed as their 'green' show, with an environmental theme. There were some parts that were amazing, like the miniature tight-rope walker (the tight-rope was mini, not the performer). The multi yo-yo type thingy was pretty impressive, and the trampoline act against the climbing wall was really interesting too. Overall, it was similar to the last show I saw of theirs, Saltimbanco, which I believe was their first show. Both had the old world music with a slight variation and quirky chirping characters. Of course both shows had amazing parts to them, but honestly I was a little underwhelmed. I guess I'm just spoiled by my first impression of them being Delirium, which I can honestly say was the best live performance I've ever seen... a feeling shared by everyone in the group I went with. It was really strange to hear that there was so much public dislike for Delirium, leading to a relatively short run, and being one of the few shows of theirs that has not been released on DVD. I'd be interested in anyone's thoughts.

I saw Ovo few weeks ago and I found it amazing. It was maybe my 10th Cirque du Soleil show and personally one of my favorite, after the ones of Las Vegas. The costumes, the music, the visuals and the new acts like the pink ants juggling with kiwi slices, the guy juggling with diabolos and the one riding a unicycle on a slick wire are insane.

I'm surprised that you think Delirium is your favorite because IMO it's the worst I've seen, and by far. I didn't like it at all.

Ovo is the first Cirque show created by a female Director. Deborah Colker is Brazilian, and you can definitely feel the vibe through colorful themes and costumes and of course, the music, which is strongly influenced by Bossa Nova.

Keep in mind that for any new cirque show, it takes between 6 and 12 months before it reaches its full potential. That‘s the downside of being the first city to see the show.

Delirium was the very first Arena show created by cirque. It turned out to be an extremely big production (huge projection screens, lighting & sound, etc) that couldn’t be supported by most arenas around the world….that’s the main reason why they cancelled it. Since then, both Saltimbanco and Alegria have been given a second life and are currently touring as Arena shows (as opposed to a traditional Cirque tent).

That's pretty much what I felt. Very family friendly... I'm sure it'll sell a lot of tix. Guess I'll have to go to Vegas if I want to see the serious shows. It does seem odd that being in their home city actually means seeing the lower end of what they have to offer, but it makes sense when I think about it.

How many shows have you seen to say this ?

The lower end of what they have to offer is in Montreal ? We don't even have a permanent one here, we have most or maybe all of the new shows that tour around the world. So it doesnt make sense and La Nouba in Disney Orlando and Wintuk in NYC aren't very spectacular.

It's impossible to have huge shows like the ones in Las Vegas or major touristic cities because the investments for the theater and all the equipments are too huge for the clientele of Montreal. For this kind of shows they need the place to be packed everyday.

OVO was my first cirque du soleil.

I expected more gadgetry more tech, but it was a very simple circus show.

Nonetheless I loved it.

All cirque shows are different...! And as much as I love permanent shows in Vegas...there is nothing like a travelling cirque show in a tent.

I personnaly loved KOOZA too just as I loved Varekai...those are shows with high caliber acrobatics. I highly recommend.

in 2005, Corteo was also criticized for being too theatrical...very Felini-like...but some people really loved it.

That's the beauty of Cirque du Soleil. It always reinvents itself.
I have seen OVO twice, once mid-april and again last week. It already changed quite a bit in one month. Some acts were dropped, shorten, new ones added, artists are getting more confortable performing... they are still in the ''période de roddage''

I wasn't trying to knock them by saying this, just that by their new shows starting here they have not had as much time to practice and refine them. I don't expect them to have shows like the ones in Vegas here in Mtl... Like I said, if I want to see some of them I realize I'll have to travel. I'll probably continue to see everything they put on here in the meantime, and for all I know the next one will be my favorite.
