piknik sunday may 24th

so I went to piknik for the first time in my life yesterday. I came with shisha, backgammon, and a nice packed lunch. I liked the concept, there were some nice looking girls.

Regarding the music, I was told it would be eletro, minimal, and along those genres. Let's keep in mind that I'm a huuuuuuuge trance lover, but always liked other electronic music genres, like electro, progressive, house, psy. I do keep an open mind. I mean I don't like rock, country, blues, hiphop, and what not, but I recognize the flow, appreciate the sound and can honestly say it's music.

BUT,I did not like what the DJ was playing from 2-4pm. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't music supposed to have some flow? I'm sure lots of you will disagree with me, and others will hopefully agree. I do not understand this genre of "let's put a bunch of sounds that don't make sense, put in some hiphop into it, chop the sounds up into short loud, obnoxious bursts of high frequency sounds that will make birds immigrating back to the north take a huge detour into russia, and call it music. I swear to god, I had the hugest head-ache from 2-4pm.

Can anyone confirm a similar experience from yesterday? Can someone enlighten me? What was that genre? And can it be expected again at piknik?

I also lost my Piknik virginity yesterday, but I showed up after 4 and stayed until about 6:30. I don't know who was playing when I arrived, but I liked her set a lot, there some good sounds in there and it flowed reasonably well.

The guy who went on after her was not my style though, too much bullshit electro noise for my taste (I hated the Dance Area tune he played, but it looked like I was in the minority), so I left. I had a good time all the same, and I'll be coming back many times in the future Definitely will not be missing Villalobos or Hawtin.

Yesterday’s Piknic (that’s how you spell it) was NOT representative of what you would normally hear there….that is why, even as a big piknic consumer for the past 5 years now, I decided to skip and wait for some good music (Ricardo Villalobos) next Sunday.

As a client, it is kind of your duty to get informed about the show you are about to see. Read the artists bio, download music from them, or ask people about it.

Or you don't care about the music, and you just want to enjoy a day in the sun and see people anyway. Cool, but then you can't complain about the music.

Piknic as a very wide range of sounds. It can go anywhere from very glitchy minimal, to even hip hop and raggae. If you go on any random day, expecting the music to be accessible to your taste no matter who plays, it is a little like purchasing a ticket to see a band at Metropolis without having a clue who's playing. You wouldn't do that would you?

Obvkously not, but I can say I like electronic music in general. I've heard electro, and its sister genres. I can sit through it, listen to it, bop my head, and say ya it's ok. But my ears told me that those sounds weren't quite music... just sounds. That's why I had a head-ache.

Well Piknic books mostly DJs that are very good in what they do, that brings something different in their own way or are true unique artists and pioneers of their genre.

So in most part, you can't really expect to go to Piknic and hear standard accessible electronic music. You will never hear tribal, electro, techno or even minimal as you know it. Cause most of them will push it forward, Piknic is really a window on creativity.

I do care about the music, but I definitely did not go expecting to necessarily hear anything I liked. I'm open-minded. So the second DJ didn't really suit my tastes; big deal. I'm not upset
