Constant couging, congestion...
Has anyone lived in a place where they were constantly coughing or having trouble breathing?
For the longest time since we moved to this house my brother has complained of chest congestion and not being able to breath well here.
I sorta noticed I was more congested as well, but didnt think much of it till I stopped working and now spend a great deal more of my time in the house.
I am constantly coughing, a shallow cough, it feels like something is bugging my windpipe and when I lay on my side and breath I can hear phlegm. I also can sort of taste a metallic blood like taste in my mouth.
These are almost the same exact things my brother has been experiencing!
A couple nights ago I couldn't even breath well enough to sleep. I took some robotussin and it helped loosen shit up and I hacked up some thick hardish phlegm and I could finally sleep.
I think its mold or just like massive amounts of dust. It is pretty dusty here... I dont know, but since my brother has been back from China/School its been worse. I think its something in his room.

better hope you don't have a carbon monoxide problem. It can happen with old houses. The paint breaks down and release carbon monoxide poison in the air. Go to Wal-Mart or Home Depot and buy a carbon monoxide alarm. You can plug it into any outlet. It should light up in a few hours if it detects toxins in the air.
If that isn't your problem you likely have a bunch of dust and stale air in the house. You are probably overdue for an air filter change on your furnace/air conditioner upstairs. It could be clogged up with all sorts of junk. Change the filter, then turn it on..Throw all your windows (and screens) wide open, and vaccum the hell out of that house. All of the dust and crap that has been stuck there for years should circulate out the windows.
You also should consider buying one or two hepa filters to place in hallways and bigger rooms. I don't even have allergies or coughing problems and use them anyway because they keep the air fresh and easier to breathe.

We re-painted right after we moved in. Most of the house was totally stripped and painted. I dont think the CM would come from the paint.
The duct work here is crap, its just sheet metal nailed across the floor joists to form the duct work. I am sure that they are horribly dirty in there.
My mom thinks it might be the carpets. My brother and I have carpet in our room, and the whole upstairs is carpeted.
The mold issue is scary. I want to get it tested but don't even know where to begin looking for people that arent going to try and scam you.
The house is around 80-100 years old. All wood walls, etc. I am not sure where mold would grow. Maybe between the tiling/bath walling and the walls?
We have two cats that live pretty much all the time in the basement where the furnace/fan is. I dont think its coming from that though. The heating/fan system has been totally off since the weather has been so nice lately and its actaully been worse.
Argh... I might move out to my beach place here if I cant figure out how to fix this soon. Its just gotten really bad the last 2 weeks. I blame my brother.

Check for CM first..it's the easiest and cheapest thing to test for.
HEPA filters will also help if it's junk getting kicked up from the carpet.. Get a couple of these mofos..
