Toronto might really stink this summer! Garbage strike close to a done deal!

Between this and the liquor store strike that is coming i think its best to get the hell out of here for the summer!

PS: Who in their right mind would go on strike in this economy?? They should be so lucky as to even have a job! I guess unions havnt learned from GM and Chrysler and wont give up till the city/province is truly bankrupt?

As for the liquor store. PRIVATIZE NOW AND ALLOW COMPETITION!

quote:
The two unions responsible for services such as garbage collection, court duties and park maintenance have asked the city to inform the labour minister about a failure in contract negotiations that could lead to a strike.

The Ministry of Labour will now issue a "no-board" report, which would give the city's 29,000 inside and outside workers the right to strike within 17 days of that report's release.

But that doesn't necessarily there will be a strike at that point. Spokespeople for both the unions and the city say they want to avoid a strike.

On Thursday afternoon, the city expressed hope a deal can still be negotiated without a work-stoppage.

Union leaders say the city wants to remove benefits from seniority, sick leave and other areas. The unions are also asking for a pay increase of about three per cent.

In the world I come from, if you aren't able to negotiate an acceptable contract with your employer, you quit and find a different job. It takes balls, but it's the best way to get where you really want to be in life.

Kind of glad I'm not living in Toronto proper right now.

You guys too? The shit hole city of Windsor has been on strike for over nearly 2 months now. No garbage pick up, no grass cutting (it'll be nice for business with the Red Bull Air Races here next week ) and no meter maids (yay! lol). It's gotten pretty bad with city strikers dumping garbage in the parks, and putting wire hangers in the grass for people who try to take it upon themselves to clean up the parks so their kids can play.

On top of that, the largest cab company in Windsor has been on strike for just as long. I can tell you right now, it's not that much fun walking home 1.5 - 2 hrs from downtown, drunk as heck just so I can go out once in awhile.

I hate this city.

P.R.I.V.A.T.I.Z.E.

If they go on strike they are in breach of contract and another company can resume the service.

The government should only be in the business of governing. And they cant even do that right.

They will not go on strike. It will go down to the last minute or it will last one or two days max before Miller sweeps in and saves the day. The union (416 - ouside workers) won't be doing anything until the weather heats up and it gets hot and humid but don't expect them to strike.

I have dealings with this union on a daily basis and to say they have it good is an understatement. However, I will say most of the actual employees don't want to strike, don't mind giving up some benefits but the union leadership has to prove they are still needed.

Privatizing most of these services would save the city so much money.

True miller will probably cave into his union buddies like he always does. What does he care?
