I'm looking to build a new pc. I haven't built a system since AGP/IDE were the standards. There's an overwhelming amount of information on this topic.

Can anyone suggest good components for 700-1000 range? Is it even a good time to buy a pc?


A couple things I'm considering...

1. AMD or Intel

2. 2, 3, 4 cores? i7 ?

3. MoBo ?

3. GFX card ?


I'm looking for the sweet spot between performance and price. I'd like to build as 'future-proof' as possible without spending a fortune. Obviously any early adopting is expensive which is why i'm reluctant to go with i7.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

As much I'm a fan of AMD, I think it's best to go with Intel for Quads.

I'd say look into the Intel Quad Core or i7

I am not sure how beneficial DDR3 is over DDR2..

the 2nd one is a beast. of course to take advantage of 12gigs of ram, u need a 64bit OS.

With DDR3, u get tri-channel..vs. dual channel in DDR2....again not sure of the benefits.

You still need video cards on top for that one though

1. Intel
2. Dual-core; quad is useful for some applications but not really games
3. Doesn't really matter, but Asus as the manufacturer, they're the most reliable
4. Any of the GeForce GTX 260 or 280 cards - there are newer ones, but those can still handle anything you throw at 'em

No need for 12 GB of RAM, but I'd suggest 4 or 6 (and yes you need Vista x64 or Windows 7 for this).

And don't bother with with sli/cross fire (dual video cards) unless you gonna be doing some major video editing or 3d animating. I am more of a ati user. Usually they are about %20 faster than Nvidia.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAIT until the Core i5 CPUs are out in stores. Should be very, very soon. Seriously. Nehalem cores at reasonable prices. No need to settle for Wolfdale/Yorkdale shit now.

If you throw Windows XP on a brand new machine you should be shot. Just put the Win7 release candidate on there and then in October when Win7 goes retail, install that. There is absolutely zero reason to use Windows XP these days unless it's for business and therefore you have some antiquated software that requires XP.

Stay away from XP Pro x64. Vista was designed for x64 from the beginning, in XP the x64 support was just bolted on, and you can really tell.

Vista or the Win7 RC, it doesn't really matter, but Cale is right, there's no good reason to saddle a brand-new machine with Windows XP.

personally i would go for a X58 chipset with Nvidia cards. here are my specs.

-EVGA X58 SLI motherboard
-Intel Core i7 3.0 ghz (OC)
-6 GB Corsair Ram
-XFX GTX285 OC
-3 1TB drives
-Antec 900 Gamer Case
-Coolermaster V8 Heatsink
