I've recently started listening to classical music much more heavily, and I'm curious as to what some of the favorite composers and pieces of music are on these boards.

I'm too much of a noob to pick a favorite composer at this point, but I've really enjoyed most of Mozart's work (Requiem Aeternum, The Magic Flute, etc.), as well as Vivaldi, Rachmaninov, and some of Philip Glass' work.

What are your favorite composers and pieces of classical music?

I like minimalist composers like Philip Glass and Steve Reich, music that borders on or more or less is ambient.

I've never heard someone play the Cello Like Yo-Yo Ma, he is really amazing.

I'm a big fan of Holst's Planet Suite. I'm not exactly an expert at classical, but that's probably my favourite classical "album".

Not a classic music listener, however some of my favourite films soundtracks include recent interpretation of classical music, check the OST of Oldboy (Yeon Wook Jo, film directed by Park Chan Wook), The thin red line (Hans Zimmer, directed by Terence Malick), In the mood for love (Shigeru Umebayashi and Michael Galasso, directed by Wong Kar Wai) and 2046 (Shigeru Umebayashi, also directed by Wong Kar Way), some nice gems are hidden in my opinion in these works.

Yeah, I had the chance to see him play a few years ago and it makes you shiver hearing some of the chords he produces.

Thanks for the ideas guys, I'm looking to buy an album on amazon, and will probably go for Holst or Rachmaninoff. I'm surprised there aren't more classical snobs on this board!

I bought Koyaanisqatsi by Philip Glass on iTunes... and I have to say it's pretty incredible.
