Yeah, its old, So old its not even on ebay .

What I need to know is what is the going price for one of these used? And where is a good place to look?

I don't imagine its that much. But you never know. I want to get a hardsynth for fiddling with [not looking for a work horse]. I was looking at various 303 clones, and feature wise, I was impressed. Though, according to acidvoice it does have the lowest reated sound in terms of its ability to sound like an original 303, though I could care less, If I used it I could easily EQ and such, to get the sound the way I want it.

Also, has anyone used one? Tell me about it.

I just sold mine for $1,300, in perfect condition.

It was never meant to be a 303 clone, though it is capable of sounding nearly identical. It's a very powerful analog monosynth with a great sequencer and plenty of modulation routing possibilities.

I sold mine because I needed to make space for my incoming 200e, hadn't used it in a while, and it was becoming redundant in my studio.

If you're looking for a simple 303 clone, get an x0xbox.

http://www.ladyada.net/make/x0xb0x/

There is nothing closer out there, and you can pick them up for around $600 from several different sources - usually with a few mods thrown in.

1,300$? Wow. How did you manage that?

As for sounding like a 303, well, I have AudioRealism BassLine 2, which is close enough for my needs. I mostly liked the 777 because of the modulation options and features.

Here is a A/B comparison of the 777 with the TB-303.

http://www.acidvoice.com/future_retro_777.htm

According to this site the best 303 clone is the Future Retro Revolution. Which is 750$ Which I may investigate also. As for the xoxbox, it has like a 2 year waiting list or something last I heard.

Another thing I was thinking of doing, as more of a hobby project, is building a TB 303. The plans are out there.

The circuit of the x0xbox is a 1:1 clone of the original 303 circuit. The only differences are parts which are no longer in production. It would be pointless to try to clone a 303 yourself since it's already done, and the x0xbox schematics can be had for free. There is not a 2 year waiting list. It's a DIY project, and there are tons of people out there who will build them for you. The waiting list is to buy a full kit - which you could easily put together yourself. It's for lazy people who have no idea how to source electronic components.

The revolution is no closer to being a 303 clone than the 777 is.

I managed $1,300 because that's what they trade for second hand these days. Only 777 were made, and they are somewhat of a cult item now.

That's pretty much the going rate give or take a hundred or two for the reasons hexadecimal explained.

They're not that old at all. They do pop up every now and then, but only 777 were made.

For a hardware 303 emulation, go x0xb0x; not sure how common they are, they should all have numbered metal tags with them if they came from ladyada.

Only 777 were made, thats an interesting fact, and does explain the price.

Hrm, I looked on the x0xb0x site, and didn't see where you can buy one, I guess you have to make it. I even checked the shop, no deal. Ebay has them for 700 bucks.

The x0xb0x site only sells them in kit form. Look around on synth forums, there are plenty of people who will source parts, PCBs, etc... and send you the finished product for anywhere from $500-800, depending on who it is, what kind of mods you want, etc.

Read the site more.

There is a limited number of kits, and they get released in batches as/when they have sourced enough parts.

You sign up to a mailing list, then wait patiently for your name to come up. As/when it does, then you can buy the kit from the shop.

Do your research first as well. Check on the ladyada / x0xb0x forums.

There are stories out there about slightly dodgier kits, the parts used, workmanship etc.

Caveat emptor, like the rest of life.

First off, telling me to "do my research" in response to what I said, doesn't make any sense.

Next, I have done my research, and seen the work of a few very good builders first hand, some of whom were using even higher quality parts than those in the ladyada kits. Yes, there are stories out there, and of course there are some shadier builders out there looking to make more profit by selling a "good enough" x0xb0x instead of a properly built, reliable one.

...and finally, you should do a bit of your own research. Forums such as the x0xb0x forum, related to specific pieces of DIY gear, tend to have a general dislike of people making money building the gear in question, putting together their own kits for sale (e.g. lost business for the original seller), etc. This sometimes results in stories that are actually "stories" being told about some builders. If you want to see more proof of this, look into the MIDIBox projects - particularly the MIDIBox SID.

Agreed. But I wasn't telling you to do your research.

I should have prefaced my response to your quote by putting in "Additionally sixofour.604,"

Sorry, I quoted you out of context. I can see how my comments could be misread.

My reply was meant to be directed to sixofour.604 as an addition to your comments, not as a reply or rebuke to yours.

Considering that they're the one looking to buy one.

I do not doubt that.

And indeed I have as well.

Context is a bitch, no?
