I agree with JohnSmith, best solution is to get tech's.
But otherwise, I have two Numark TT-100's that have OK torque but not that great, and on some records (the heavier ones), the platter stops when I try to backspin, just like your situation. What I usually do in solution is to lift the record ever so slightly from where I'm holding it down, so that less friction is created between the record and the slipmat. Usually the platter keeps spinning when I do this.

JohnSmith: interesting solution regarding the wax paper. I would like to try that too, though I don't know where I can get wax paper in that format.
