Hey guys 'n' girls...

I'm looking for a drum machine / step sequencer plugin for use in Ableton. It has to be able to import .wav samples and dump the midi notes of a selected instrument to a midi track in the DAW. I have an old version of Reason and absolutely love the Re-Drum but I don't want to have to Re-Wire any more. I have tried demos of a few different ones but they usually don't dump to midi too easy if at all.

Anybody know of something out there that I can try? Doesn't have to be free, I'm expecting to pay good money if it does what I want.

I haven't actually but it looks interesting. Will give it a go. Just to add, I would really like something with the traditional step sequencer where the light rolls across the 16 pads like the original 808 or 909 roland machines. I almost purchased an MC-909 but SURELY there is a piece of software which does the same thing.

I love this format as well, which is why I can ultimately never love Battery like I love the Redrum, even though I use both.

I have an old Electribe which I love so much for the very reasons you mention. I have guru and it's good - vey close to a real drum machine - but the interface has so many variables spread over different pages that it's not got that simplicity that a traditional drum machine does.

I think redrum is the closest but would love to hear of any other options as well.

Does the NI maschine compare?

Yes, Maschine will import .wavs, but you can't currently drag the MIDI into your host and arrange it there (yet). However, the 1.1 update that is currently in beta testing is going to add a bunch of new features and there is speculation (and a lot of hope) that this will be possible. Quite frankly, that's one of my only disappointments with it, but it's a big one. That said, it's still very useable with its current workflow (i.e., arranging sequences/songs with its internal sequencer/arranger).

As others have mentioned, Guru is probably what you're looking for. BTW, MOTU BPM also does not let you drag MIDI clips into your host - everything is arranged in its internal step sequencer/song arranger similar to Maschine.

Excellent. Gives me something to think about anyway. I have downloaded a demo of Guru and so far it looks like it will do what I want it to do. But if anyone else has any other alternatives they could recommend that would be great.

There are so many out their with any easy to use interface (like Re-Drum) but all seem to have some type of annoying limitation.

I can't understand why they haven'y thought of midi transfer from drum hardware controllers. You can do a midi dump from the Electribe and roland machines but it;s a big letdown that the both the BPM and maschine don't do it.
