Welcome to the digital age and the growing popularity of trance.

Almost anyone can produce a track now and put it on a website to be downloaded. Producers make far more tracks now then they use to. At one time producers actually spent a long time putting together a track that meant something to them. Now they can throw together a ton of tracks in the same amount of time and put them out there for the masses to download in hopes that one becomes a major hit. Once they get a hit track then they just produce a bunch of tracks that sound the same while the oven is still hot.

Another factor is how long you have been going to clubs...at some point it all just sounds the same and you need to take a break. I know I've taken at least two breaks form going out that lasted years....when I went back out things sounded fresher and new again.

hmm I have been bored with most of clubbing since crobar and roxy died (and I left Toronto). In terms of *TRANCE* nights I prefer bigger clubs with the lasers, dancers, big scene, big vibe, etc, etc.....Sooo since I dont have access to the Guv as much and the big club scene here in NYC sucks (pacha...blah!!), I jast havent had the same vibe.


But you are right about the music, too, the combo of the scene and repetitive tracks is just soooo boring me lately!!

I think there are still a lot of good productions coming out...
it's just that now the amount is wayyy higher making it hard for everyone to keep up with what's good and what isn't.
Also EVERY song nowadays gets remixed!
Markus for example produces a song and then he comes out and makes a COLDHARBOUR mix of it...

also agreed on too many tracks. Someone in NYTA said "you have to sort thru 50 tracks to find one decent one." Which to me, defeats the purpose, because i refuse to waste 2 boring hours in hopes if getting 5 minutes of ear-bliss.

I'm with you Kelly. Also the trend is to combine techno elements into trance which don't blend well together imo, like Menno or Sander V Doorn (for the most part, just all bang and no buck, no flow whatsover for my taste). Gareth Emery is a lot better though from what I've seen. Or to come up with complete fluff we've seen time and again that end up being super boring and unoriginal. Some tracks can be outstanding but most are crap. I haven't had a great time at a trance party in years...

That is the difference with the digital age... 10 years ago there were various filters before anything ever got pressed to vinyl (or CD). Not only the artist, but various label folks and managers all had to agree it was worth putting out. They were not always right but at least they could remove most of the complete junk.

While this may have stifled talent a bit it made everyone's lives easier, including the DJ who could grab a stack and know he or she (and ususally he) would find at least a few good tracks to play that weekend.

Its obviously been a positive thing to allow more access to more artists and therefore improve variety but it certainly has watered down the talent pool... kinda like adding extra teams to the NHL.

I love trance, now & back then.

People start to change their perspective on trance because they seem to always be looking for the same thing. They want to hear only 1 style of trance, or nothing. It's more about broadening your musical tastes to other genres & sub-genres to really appreciate trance the same. Too many people stick to a certain genre/sub-genre and eventually of course you will think there's a lot of SHIT out there. This is true, that there really is A LOT of shit out there, but because of the digital age now, we can actually see it, when before we didn't have a choice, the DJ's didn't have a choice, dj's played the best and only the best, therefore you only heard the best. Everyone played on vinyl, and good luck getting shitty tracks or 10 remixes of a track on a vinyl!

But honestly, because I have a monthly show, all I need is 10-15 kick ass songs in a month, and it makes me perfectlty content with how trance is today. I think people want more good stuff too quickly, people get bored of 1 or 2 or 3 tracks after listening to them 3-4 times and feel they want something new in a matter of days. I bet if you looked through your music catalogue of everything you liked 6 months ago, you'd think there's a shit load of good stuff around, you just never took the time to really appreciate it

that as compared to how back in the day a dj would spend 3-4 hours in a record store and end up walking away with maybe 2 records at most?
