Thumbs up Ableton better look out...new Sonar feature

The next version of Sonar is incorporating what appears to be an updated version of the recently discontinued Project5's Groove Matrix. If you've ever used P5, you'd know that it was obviously based on Live's Session view. I'm sure it won't compare with Live's capabilities, but it will be a nice addition to Sonar. Someone leaked a short video, which doesn't show too much, but here it is anyway:

Yeah, but sonar's bloated and unstable. Live's relatively stable and quite streamlined.

Its slow, but I don't think you could call it bloated in terms of useless features or complicated configurations.

It's interesting to see them take a live performance route.

Unstable? How much experience do you have with Sonar? I've used it virtually every day for many years with no issues. Yes, it has more features than Live has, but there's not much that's complicated about its "configuration" and each of those "useless features" is actually useful to some sector of its diverse user base. You have to understand that Live has a much more specific niche in the marktetplace, whereas Sonar has a much more diverse user base.

They're actually marketing it as more of a non-linear arrangement feature, and not so much a live performance feature. That makes perfect sense, since I don't see Cakewalk going out and trying to steal the DJ market from Live. But, from what I've seen so far, it looks like it could easily be used for either. Regardless, I doubt that it will compete with Live - I think it will be viewed as a great feature for existing/repeat Sonar customers and will probably attract some new blood who like the idea of Live's paradigm, but also have more serious audio tracking, editing, mixing needs and/or deeper MIDI implementation needs.

It's going to be hard to beat Live in a live sense, considering it was originally built for live performances. It's very stable, it has everything that a live act needs, many people have it and many people trust it.
You don't just come up with a copy cat feature and expect people to flock to your sequencer.

Agreed - that's exactly the point I was making in my previous two posts. It will be a nice feature for existing customers, will probably draw some of the Project5 users (now that Cakewalk discontinued it), and may even tip some favoribility its way for those already considering Sonar, but I don't see Cakewalk competing for the Ableton crowd and I don't think they do either.

The funny thing is, you should see the bitch-fest that all the guitar heroes are having on the Cakewalk forums over the new MIDI features, step sequencer improvements, etc. You'd think Cakewalk just told them that Sonar wouldn't record 12-bar blues anymore.

:P

I wouldn't be surprised.

Change is tough, especially when it comes to DAW upgrades.

So what's their issue with it? If they are getting upgrades and yet retaining all the old features then what's their problem? The extra money for the upgrade?
