Track Selection

Could anybody give me any Advice on how to select best trance to buy. in order to build a set. Becouse Im downloading and putting onto cd what I think will work. I Only end up using about half of what I buy?

Whats the best way to go about Buying?
Im fine if it's vinyl Becouse I know the styles im buying. And there is only so much out there new that is around.
Thanks,

I think the only thing you can do is review your own selection process.

I used to do the same - some of the stuff I have on CD I can't explain why I ever burnt it!

TBH I used to buy vinyl the same way - some of the vinyl I had I would never have purchased a second time around.

It's all part of the learning curve.

Listen to podcasts or online radio shows and whenever you hear a track that you like, write its name down. Then when you see it on the online store, buy it and cross it off the list. If you don't like a track, chances are you're not going to play it. Granted I've bought a few tracks that I liked but don't listen to all that much. However, there are only a few of those out of a few hundred.

Well, sounds like you know what you want - I'd just stick at it - and learn from the trial and error.

There are plenty of online radio stations out there. Don't be afraid to go to one and just listen to it even if it is not a big-name DJ's show.

Just keep buying the music you love, u can't make a set instantly from every track u buy, just keep collecting and collecting until one day u have a selection which can be transformed into full dj-mix.. that's what I do..

For example I bought some tracks today which are awesome and I'd really really like to feature those on my next months promo mix, but after testing them out I can't get them mixed well to anything I have in my collection but I know that one day I'll get some new tunes which can be melted to these I got today and then new roads open for making a set.

And yes.. try using Mixed In Key software, it really helps out for creating and planning a mix!

Hope this helped

Don't you just buy music for pure listening value?

I agree with you there. A lot of the time you just have to wait till you get enough tracks!
In my mind once you develope your own style I thnk it will just be a matter of time before you start to use those tracks that have been lying around. But when your there trying to put together what you brought It can get frustrating Especially if you really can't wait to mix it!
