Ive been producing for sometime now and have been debating getting some nice Yamaha studio monitors. They are costly but I know i will eventually have to invest. Money really isnt the issue. I suppose what I am really asking is if it is possible to fully mix down a track trough headphones professionally. Every track I have produced thus far has been mixed through either my pioneer HDJ-1000's or my noice-canceling BOSE QC 2's. The mix turns out alright but there seems like there is the missing clarity that I am looking for. Please leave me some advice, or personal experiences.

Some things are hard to gauge through headphones. I like to feel how the bass hits me in the chest, so I use the monitors for that. I can't get a feel for the bass impact through headphones. It may sound like there's a lot of bass, but it may not "punch" the way it should.
That's just for me personally though. Everyone is different.

Completely agree, and the more monitoring devices you have, the better. You don't want to produce and release tracks using one monitoring source. Now you don't need to go out and buy two different pairs of monitors and 3 different headphones, but a solid pair of headphones and a solid pair of monitors are a very good idea. I have the AKG 701's and the Yamaha 80's

I've been wondering about this very subject for a bit now, ever since i moved back into apartments.
I have AKG 240's as well Senneheiser's HD 205's (edit: both headphones). I would like to get monitors but 1. I have no money, 2. I live in an apartment.
Well just use the monitors during the day and use them sparingly. You don't have to get an expensive pair. The Behringer Truth's are an amazing bang-for-buck monitor that is plenty good. I've got a pair myself but they're been relegated to my DJ set up now that I have the Yamaha's.
The only negative thing I can say about the behringers is they don't get super loud, but in your situation I doubt you'll need this. Especially being in an apartment and likely having a small room.

so the general consensus is to own both great headphones and good monitors. Good thread gents.

I have some stereo speakers that my brother used for his entertainment center a long time ago. That should be good enough right?

I have no idea. Depends on the speakers and depends on your ears. Some people could get it done, some couldn't. Some can't even get it done with a $20,000 studio and years of experience, so it's not all about the equipment. I would recommend getting a pair of the behringer truths though. They are really cheap and will surprise the hell out of you. They're one of the few products Behringer makes that is good. Read the reviews.
