Anyone keeping thier eyes on this?

I think it's about to, herm..., blow up.

The offensive is in full swing and has just begun to get the attention of the world. Last week no one cared as a baloon floated around and H1N1 vaccines got delayed but now the BBC seems to be getting many more hits on the issue.

Personally I find the attack on Iran to be the most confusing. Who is drawing them into the conflict and why? My gut tells me that it was a pro-Taliban / Al-Queda group but it looks like it could spark bigger problems if things fall in the wrong way.

Psshhh, didn't you hear? THE BALLOON BOY TRICKED US!!

That's obviously far more important.

Personally, I don't think Pakistan is going to erupt, though it is very unstable and it's an absolute embarrassment that we're not following the story at all in the US.

What I really don't like is that Pakistan was so hesitant to move on this issue and has been since 2001. I think there is a reason they are worried but I hope it doesn't prove true.

That Iran seems to be getting drawn in is no great comfort either.

The most "interesting" (for lack of a better term) turn of events for me has been the militants taking direct shots at the Pakistani military.

For the longest time, I got the impression that the ISI and military were reluctant to go after the militants due to previous allegiances and shady deals etc.

I'm not sure what has caused the change in tactic but it looks like it has pissed off the PK military something bad and now they're going to try to sort them out in the north. Whether this will work or not obviously remains to be seen.

Good point about former allegiances, I'd completely forgoten about that.

There was a professor talking on the radio about it yesterday, and he said this was the reason why it took the Pakistani government so long to attack these groups of fanatics.

According to him (I wish I could remember his name), when India and Pakistan were created, India vowed to become a secular state, whereas Pakistan became an Islamic state. Religion and government don't always get along that well, and they ended up forging these alliances with extremists that turned out to become a real nuisance to them. Pervez Musharraf didn't have the guts to crack down on these guys, but the situation became increasingly difficult to maintain, and that's why there's all this mayhem and chaos in Pakistani soil.

He was optimist about the future of Pakistan, however. I don't know anything about it myself, and just decided to share the little I know to those of you that may be interested
