I think after years of complaining I finally learned how to make a bassline =]
Ok so this is a result of my bassline thread breakdown from a while back, when I said a "professional" bassline couldn't be made with vsts.
Well this sample is all z3ta (synths too) and for the first time I think I'm actually satisfied with the bass, and believe it or not it wasn't doing all this crazy technical shit that got me to this point, I actually went back to the basics.
I noticed my layering skills sucked. I had this problem with picking 2 completely different sounds and trying to tweak them so they meshed together into one amazing bassline, it NEVER worked. And I found overall 3 things made a pretty big difference.
Layering bass is A LOT easier if you pick 2 of the same exact bass sounds, and tweak each JUST A LITTLE BIT. My problem was I was trying to always get this deep sound by tweaking both sounds entirely too much, and it always wound up becoming muddy or just sounding like shit.
Second, sidechaining. I realized even when you cut under 150 its still a good idea to sidechain, I use to assume because those frequencies were cut, that the kick would have plenty of space to breath. But now I found a very SLIGHT sidechain is the key. You simply adjust to the point where the kick retains most of its natural punch and dynamics, but not too much to where theres a noticeable pumping sound.(unless thats what you're going for just not my cup of tea)
And finally, I've tried detuning, phasing, flanging, chorus, bit crushing, EVERYTHING on bass. But it still seems like a good distortion plugin is the way to go to get that rough dynamic edge. (and FL's native distortion is absolutely terrible too do not use it)
Anyway, thats what I've learned so far. Please don't focus on anything but the bass in the mix, theres a lot more I could have done to the mix itself but I just wanted it to be heard with other elements.
I'd really like to know what people think. I know its nothing special but I think I have a pretty decent formula down now thats way more consistent and effective then before.
